yvon_bourque1
Hi Pentaxians and friends, Every once in a while, a product comes out that radically change the market or at least the way we go about something. We all know how easy it is to scratch the LCD monitor on our digital cameras. I tried half a dozen of screen protectors and all had some kind of problems. Either the plastic sheet would bubble up with trapper air, or would not be perfectly clear. Some would reflect the light so much that I could not see the monitor as well. Let?s face it, a thin sheet of film will only protect the LCD screen from minor scratches. The LCD monitor can still crack on impact. Then there the kind of hood protectors that do protect the LCD monitor, but you have to lift the cover after each picture?doesn?t work for me. Finally, last week I found one that really protects the LCD monitor from scratches, breaking of the LCD and has 12 multi-coating layers to reduce reflection and glare. It is made by Giottos. (They are mostly known for their tripods. Actually, all of my tripods, monopods and tripod heads are from Giottos.) The screen protectors are actually made of real quality glass. So if something hits the LCD, the screen protector will crack instead of the LCD monitor as there is a small space between the monitor surface and the screen protector. That also eliminated the bubble problems. It?s not cheap, $24.00 to $48.00 at B&H Photo. I think it?s well worth the money. They make them in all sizes. I bought two of them for the K20D and the K200D, which both have 2.7? LCD, monitor. It comes with instructions and a micro-fiber magic cloth to clean the monitor before installing the screen protector. Most of all, it looks great on the camera. Thank you for reading, Yvon Bourque
garry_young1
Yvonne, my local camera dealer put one on my K100D for free when I purchased it. There is also a smaller one for the LCD screen on top next to the shutter button. They are really useful. I wasn't aware that everyone wasn't using them - I presumed it was part and parcel of my Pentax purchase! I guess I'll have to go back and thank the guy! Especially as you say they are so expensive. miserere_mei
Yvon, a slightly unrelated question: What eyepiece do you have installed on your K20D? Did you change the whole eyepiece or is it only an attachment?
garry_young1
Sorry Yvon, I spelled your name wrong!
andrewg_ny
Mis, I believe that is the O-ME53 magnifying eyecup. It replaces the standard eyecup.
mountainvisions
The best screen protector is the Sony PSP protector sold at best buy (or any fine electronics dealer). Cost about $6, doesn't add any bulk or catch points to the camera, and last as long as you keep the camera. It's glare resistant, and actually unoticable if properly applied (not that hard to do). The LCD on the K10/20D isn't exposed, it's covered by plastic, so all you need to do is cover the plastic with something transparent to protect it from scratches. As far as being optically pure with multicoatings and all that. Nonsense, the LCD only needs to be clear enough to change settings, and look at the blinkies. yvon_bourque1
Miserere, Andrew is correct. That's what I use on my K20D, the O-ME53. It costs $35.00 at B&H. It has a magnification of 1.2x. It makes adjusting the dipoter easier on the K10D and K100D series. The K20D's standard eye piece allows for easy access to the diopter adjustment, but has no magnification other than the standard issue. shots worth sharing
Thanks, Justin. I figured the screen must be pretty durable if I haven't trashed it in almost a year. It's a little blurry, what with all that fried dough and chocolate, but solidly intact. I pretty much only use it as a data screen so a few scratches--if they happen--will be no big deal. I might pick up one of those protectors, though (or not.)
andrew_ng7
I bought a 'da products screen protector for my k10d. I've had on on my canon SD400 for years and finally ordered one and installed it recently.<br><br> http://www.daproducts.com/ <br><br> Cost $6 USD + $2 shipping. <br><br> You will need to order a custom size as I don't think they have one for the k10d yet. <br><br> I used a digital caliper and decided that 57mm(width) x 47mm(length) would work the best and it fits perfectly. <br><br> <i><b>"All Custom Cut protectors are laser cut from the same 1/16" scratch resistant acrylic as our production models. Custom Cut protectors do not have printed borders to hide the adhesive. The adhesive supplied is clear and will generally blend in nicely when applied to the camera."</i></b><BR><BR> I'll try to get some pictures up.
