deaner66
I should have put this with the battery thread, but I'm thinking of getting a split-image focusing screen for about $30 to help with my MF lenses. How good do these work?
marosari00
I have a katzeyes in my K10D with the AF brackets. Works well in AF and MF. My primary lens is MF and with the split screen focusing is quick and precise. http://www.katzeyeoptics.com
davidmantilla
Manuel, Have you had any difficulties using spot metering with the Katz split screens? I have been thinking of getting one but their website scared me when they said spot metering would be affected. How has your experience been? deaner66
Katzeyes would be nice. But I'm not spending $190 US for a focusing screen right now. That's why I'm wondering about the cheap Chinese optics. Seems like Miserere Mei was mentioning something about them.
miserere_mei
Yup, I have a cheapo Chinese one. Happy so far. Seems there are 2 kinds, one ground from K1000 focusing screens, and another from Minolta (I think). I have the latter, but it appears the ones from K1000s are thinner and fit better. Mine does have a very snug fit. autofocus is not affected because the AF mechanism is not on this side of the focus screen. The only thing that can be affected is metering, and like I think I've said before, my manual lenses meter a lot better with the Chinese screen. I'm not knocking Katzeye, and I would love to have one, just cannot afford the asking price.
from darkness
Hello, I cut out an old split screen from a defect Nikon camera. Found some tutorials on the net. Due to the fact that it was Nikon and not Pentax I had some doubts regarding the compatibility. It works like charm. No back or front focus. I am using only manual lenses. It also measures the light correctly. If you have an defect old film camera (Pentax would be nice) you can try it. Total cost (for the defect camera) ~ 10EUR
miserere_mei
Curec has a point. You can buy a defective K1000 for $10 (shipped) on eBay. If you have the time to ground the glass down, it's a great deal. You can also make yourself a screen with a diagonal prism :-)

marosari00
David, have not used spot metering yet. I'll experiment with it and advise.
marosari00
David, no issues that I have noticed with spot metering.
