r.t. dowling
Let's see your photos of bugs, insects, creepy crawlies, whatever you want to call them. I'll start. : ) <br><br>(I live in Maine so I don't have anything particularly exotic or scary; hopefully folks from other parts of the world can make up for that!) <br><br><img src="http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y144/mec407/bugs/P1000550.jpg"><br><br><img src="http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y144/mec407/bugs/P1000587.jpg"><br><br><img src="http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y144/mec407/bugs/P1000615.jpg"><br><br><img src="http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y144/mec407/bugs/mayflies.jpg"><br><br><img src="http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y144/mec407/bugs/wcsb_10302005.jpg"><br><br>

r.t. dowling
I don't like them either... but they make interesting photographic subjects! Except for the ones that move really quickly, like spiders and silverfish and earwigs... {shudder}

r.t. dowling
Incredible detail in those shots! You can see the individual lenses on the eyes and everything. What kind of homemade macro did you use?
garry_young1
Actually, it was an old exakta 70-300mm zoom. It developed a kind of haze due to a plasticized lens. I stripped the front focusing glass off, and removed the center zoom glass. I then added a rubberized plumbing fitting, and viola - a new macro lens that shoots a shot of anything 11 millimeters by 8 millimeters. Lots of fun, but there is only one focal plane and that is about an inch out from the front of the rubber - so getting bugs to co-operate is REALLY tough! <P> <b>Here is a shot of the lens in its new form:</b> <P> <center> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/24750090@N07/2440279416/" title="macro lens rear by Garry Young, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2199/2440279416_dd73e71503_o.jpg" width="511" height="341" alt="macro lens rear" /></a> <P> <b> From the side - you can see the rubber plumbing fitting on the front.</b> <P> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/24750090@N07/2440279444/" title="macro lens front by Garry Young, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2227/2440279444_925938bac5_o.jpg" width="511" height="341" alt="macro lens front" /></a> <P> <b> From the front.</b> </center> <P>

hagar
Wow, I did not realize we had such a large number of entomolgists in this forum. These are some magnificent shots. Garry, I must say 'Hats off". Do you practice hypnosis on those guys? LOL. This Saint Andrew's Cross Spider was hanging from the patio ceiling.. it was tough getting shots of him. They have very pretty webs. <p> <a href="http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2050425770011358559bqCXhX"><img src="http://inlinethumb20.webshots.com/41683/2050425770011358559S600x600Q85.jpg" alt="2176PN"></a> <p> A look at his backside <a href="http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2071155500011358559yJfXiQ"><img src="http://inlinethumb25.webshots.com/40344/2071155500011358559S600x600Q85.jpg" alt="2179PN"></a>
garry_young1
Actually Haig, I spend a lot of time selling my interpersonal skills in the insect world, and hot news spreads fast. So if you ever meet a 6 foot 8 chap whispering surreptitiously to an insect, that may well be me!
