graybrick
I'm shopping on the bDay for a new lens, since my order for my 85/1.8 was cancelled due to backorder... so I went to the auction to poke around, and found this. What a sweet deal, and buy it now! But, as the adage goes, if it looks too good to be true... I looked the seller up, and he looks legit from his feedback hx. Except, he must have moved from SC to Ontario sometime yesterday. And he used to sell exclusively small items of clothing and accessories, until day before yesterday. And, he took paypal, yes, until yesterday. Oh, and he's giving this away for exactly the same price... Go ahead, send him a money order. Better yet, send him your Discover account number and secret code. Nah, just send him $1100 in cash. Guess I won't be buying a lens tonight... (Posted this in the internet sellers forum last night, which doesn't seem to appear in the unified view forum, so here it is again... the items in question are 85mm f/1.2 for $1100, and 500mm f/4 for, yep, $1100... and it gets better today! check out this link and watch out before you buy... someone bought the 85/1.2 scam last night!) http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZgcjg24
fotograf
almost sounds like someone possibly hacked his EBAY account and started these auctions. Most have the same buy it now price. He has 100 percent positive feedback, so why would he have a reason to lie about auctions, now?
Matt Laur
This is EXACTLY why you never, EVER reply to an e-mail from eBay (or anywhere else) that wants you to click a link in the e-mail and then go fill in your credentials somewhere to check on something, confirm something, etc. If you think eBay has something to tell you, close the e-mail, and just point your browser at their web site yourself, and sign into your account. This is true of your bank, of PayPal, of ANY site like that. Otherwise, you run the risk of being phished. And one of the prime motivations for phishing an eBay account's user ID and password is to do exactly what you see described above... to hijack an account with a good reputation, and to pull off something like this fraud. Keep your wits about you, folks, and be very thoughtful about e-mail that appears to come from any entity with which you have an account of any type. graybrick
Yep, this account has definitely been hijacked from a small-time, legitimate seller. I've sent a fraud alert to eBAY, so it'll be nuked soon, but not soon enough. So far I think he's had at least two sales at $1100 each. There's hardly ever a great deal on eBay, especially on modern camera gear. I often see lenses and cameras selling used for more than the new price at legitimate retailers. sagephotoworld.com
I had a great deal on ebay - I sold a lens for more than I paid for it :D
kelly_flanigan1
Yea;; right; hardly any deals on ebay. Thus I over paid for my speed-o-copy close up rig for Kodak Ektra for 99 cents; a 5cm F2 LTM Nikkor that focuses to 18 inches for 9 dollars and countless other steals? Brian
Kelly, Mr H. was talking about modern gear. The old old stuff still goes for peanuts. I know because I'm trying to sell it...
