what's right flash unit for canon eos20D

Can somebody recommend a a flash unit for my canon eos20D? multipurpose

Canon makes 2 decent flashes, the 430EX and the 580EX II. One is less expensive and has fewer features, the other can do anything you could want a flash to.

If you want used, you might look for a 380EX, 420EX, 550EX or 580EX.

All EX flash units work fine. Your budget is the deciding factor. That said, due to reflector card reasons I'd prefer the 420EX. The 380EX is also a great beginner's flash that is very user-friendly.

The 20d can work with most flashes one way or another, EX flashes the most convenient :)

I use DIY <b><a href="http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-82.html">reflector cards</a></b>. Due to the rounded head design with the integrated wide angle diffuser I cannot attach them as close as on the 380EX/420EX, limiting their effectiveness.

580EX used if you can get one. Or just splash out for the 580EXII. As has been said before, I doubt you'll hear a 580 owner say they wish they had the 430! the opposite is a more likely scenario ;)

I have the Sigma EF-500 DG which is very similar to the Canon Speedlite 550EX. See http://photonotes.org/reviews/sigma-ef-500-super/ .

It has most of the functions of the Canon but is less expensive and works very well on both my 20D and my 40D. I got as it could cover my 10-22mm lens, and it does.

I have had and have all of these. For starters and keeping price in mind IMO I would go with the 430EX. Faster recycle time than 550, 420 or sigma 500, much easier controls to figure out, is smaller and works great. Second choice is 550, which will give more light and a few more options you will never use and much cheaper than 580s. I picked up my second 430 for $150 used so keep your eyes open. I use it first over my 580ex 580exII and 550s, unless I am going wireless ETTL then of course I use a 580 for master. then invest in some good NiMH 2700mah batteries.
