mwtphoto
Sorry if this is the wrong form for this question, but here it is. I just received a NOS 500/8 Zeiss mirror lens. It is inbrand new condition. When I look through the front of the lens I noticed a small smudge that appears to be reflecting on the back mirror. It looks like a small peice of crap with a blob in the middle and then faint rings around the blob. My question should I be concerned about it re picture quality and do you think I should get it cleaned. Thank you.
JDMvW
If it's on the front glass, it could be easily cleaned, but the mirror itself is surface coated and it would be probably better to try it and see how it does. Cleaning is not likely to be an economical option, but ask some service outfit to see. It sounds like fungus.
dan_fromm2
Um, if it is from Jena it ain't a Mirotar. Mirotars come from Oberkochen.
mwtphoto
it is a mirotar with the t* coating etc....
mwtphoto
I believe the jena 500/8 wasn't a mirror lens?
mwtphoto
It doesn't look like any fungus I have seen before. It looks like maybe a blob of oil that has splashed on to the surface.
joseph_wisniewski
I thought Mirotars came from a labyrinth in Crete...
mwtphoto
good one Joseph, Zeiss maybe good but I am not sure they are mythical. I will try to capture an image of the blob and post it tomorrow.
mwtphoto
I was unable to get a photo of the dirt on the mirror. It appears to be on the back of the mangin mirror and is about .4 cm - do you think it will impact the images?
steven_moseley1
"do you think it will impact the images?" ...that is a 'how long is a piece of string question' and impossible to answer. Only choice is to take some images, preferably on tripod and blow em up big...you are either happy, or you are not. Either way, is the lens 'as described' or not? If no, then personally I would want either a full or partial refund, depending on how bad I thought the issue was...as it certainly does affect the value. mwtphoto
i think i will try as you suggest Steven and take some images and then make a decision either to keep it, send it back or have it cleaned. i did get it for a good price and other then the spot of ? on the one mirror it is brand new in every respect. Dust in my regular lenses has never bothered me or my images I am not so sure about mirror lenses - these are new to me. thanks for the advice.
