$500 budget for a wide angle lens on a D40/D40X

Just found out that any of the Nikon 28mm's won't meter at all with my wife's

D40X. It would have been great since it's cheaper and it would work on my D80.

So my only two choices are between the Tokina 12-24mm and the Sigma 10-20 HSM.

I am aware that the Tokina is more expensive and it's only a manual focus on

the D40/D40x as oppose to the Sigma which will autofocus and thiry bucks

cheaper. Can you guys tell me which one is better? I wish my local Photo Store

would have either of those lenses for me try it out but Ritz and Penn Camera are

as you know very limited with their inventory. Thanks!

have the Nikon 12-24 and the sigma 10-20. I do Real Estate and architectural photography, the Sigma 10-20 never comes off the camera. I notice a huge difference with the extra 2mm between 10 and 12. The draw back is that lines don't get straight (straighter) until 13mm. I save 10mm for tight areas like bathrooms and if needed adjust in CS3.

My vote is for the 10-20

The Sigma 10-20 is a fine lens. See Thom Hogan's review. I have it and, wide open, the corners are very ugly but stopped down they are okay and can always be edited out. In any case, all areas of the image compare well to the other lenses and it handles very nicely on both my D50 and D60. Highly recommended.

As the previous poster said: the extra width to 10mm is valuable. Buy it now.

Rico,

Im a little confused. You say your Nikon 28mm's wont meter on your wifes D40x but your asking about recommendations for a ultra wide angle lens. The 28mm would not come close to wide angle on either body since it will have a field of view closer to a 42mm lens. Im sure you already have a nikon kits like the 18-70mm, 18-50mm, or the 18-135mm. All of these would be wider than the 28mm on either the D80 or D40x.

Here is a rather biased review of the two:

In the early days of autofocus, I purchased a sigma telephoto zoom. An internal AF gear had stripped.

I contacted sigma several times for a replacement part or repair. On both occasions, they refused an out of warranty repair and told me parts were not available. The persons I spoke with, were both quite rude. Can you guess which wide angle zoom I recently purchased?

Steve: sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Did you buy the Sigma new or used?

I have owned two Sigma lenses. Both gave professional quality results. Both had no problems of any kind. I have never had to contact support, so have nothing to say there except: with any bureaucracy, sometimes we have to be a bit persistent.

To the original poster: If you don't need ultra-wide, you could get a AF-D 24mm. It'll meter but won't autofocus.

But anyway, the Sigma is really the "standard" lens for ultra-wide. Lots of people have it, including the very serious shooters and pros. See the Thom Hogan website for why.

I have the Sigma 10-20 HSM with my D60 and they work well together. I am very pleased with the image quality (first photo in my humble gallery). One thing you should be aware of though is that you can't really use your built in flash on the D40 as the wide lens would cast a shadow if you open it at the wider end.

Yes, sigma corners are ugly wide open. Crop them out makes the lens less wide. It also has significant distortion mostly correctable with photoshop. The lens cap will not stay on.

There have been more complaints here on Sigma lenses not auto-focusing properly than all others combined.

It is a throw away lens when it breaks. Problem is it is a $500 throw away.

The 10-20 is an extremely popular lens amongst the the d40/d40x crowd. For the most part only hear glowing reviews. I personally don't have one however it's on my short list for a future lens purchase

the other I'm considering is the Nikon which is almost double the cost

The key factors which are swaying me is the short 1yr warranty on the sigma and the high price on the Nikon which comes with the usual 5yr

From what people are saying they love the sigma and the extra 2mm

I actually haven't talked to anyone who bought the Nikon

The price is a big issue for us d40/d40x users

Sigma 10-20--I love it. I don't think it's all that bad around the corners, given what it does, and what you do with it.

Just as a follow-up to the above comments on the warranty for the Sigma lens - it comes with a factory 10-year warranty in Canada while only 1-year in the U.S. I was quite surprised about that when I bought mine in Canada where I live. I can also tell you that the lens cap is also better built now with the newer shipment of the 10-20mm lenses.
