back to basics

i've shared a bit of my recent shooting, but i haven't been entirely pleased

with it. too many shots seemed like the pictures of others.

to set matters straight, during the past few days, i tried capture the classic

sort of thing i do, which tends to isolate subjects and look for complexity in

texture as opposed to large-scale arrangements of items. in spite of falling off

my bike twice (we still have ice patches here), i think i am happy again - here

is the set...

(note: as usual, all through SMC 50mm f/1.4 manual lens)

i'd be interested in seeing some of your "core" stuff.

cheers.

I think they're all very nice. I had a good laugh to when I came across 'happy ending'..

My core stuff requires me to travel so there are long periods between images and style changes. Each city or new place I go to impresses upon me and, my images take on that feeling I think. For instance, when in Wales it was raining but bright and lush so when looking at those images they should convey that feeling. When I was in Spain, in Orba with the bulls, it was a frantic and fun evening that blurred by, literally. The atmosphere was busy and the drinks were flowing. Those images should convey that feeling as well.

Those are my core competencies, everything else is filler. I'll take images of people but, I suck at it. I'll take macro shots but, they're few and far between. I'll shoot flowers because I like the contrast, not because I like flowers, and so on.. Some images of mine are here.. http://web.mac.com/tmaher3

I always enjoy your pictures, Vuk. They're the type I would like to take, but hardly ever manage to. We also share a joy for "alternative" titles.

Interstellar Travel is my clear favourite, with Spanish Mare close behind. I would love to see a larger version of Fragment of Whale Unconscious; I suspect this would have been very popular material at LSD parties in the 60s.

As you asked for some of our own work, here are some that I think come from a similar artistic place as yours. I'm not sure they are "core", as all but the last were taken with my P&S, when I was starting to fall heavily in love with making photographs, not just looking at them, but still didn't quite understand where I was going. Not that I necessarily know that now, but you understand what I mean, right :-) Let me know what you think, Vuk.

Interstellar Travel is my clear favourite

you have a god eye ;-) that is mine as well, though clearly not the obvious choice.

i like your breaking metal 2. overall, i think that a slightly less literal approach is worth experimenting with, if that suits you, of course.

i really like your picture of the small clump of evergreen trees in valley reflected on very still water. can't link to shot because of flash (?) website, but it's the one on the very front page (top right under "sample works" title).

@Miserere Mei:

I *really* like these photos of yours, except for the last one that

I probably "don't get" (plus, I find yellow to be a

too "loud-speaking" colour). They are, if I may say so, of a very

*intellectual* kind of photography. Maybe the colours too strong on

the first two? The titles are thought-provoking, too.

Congratulations.

Thanks, Alex! Funnily enough, the last one is the only one shot with the K10D, so maybe what you don't like is the camera :-) It was the contrast between smooth yellow and rough grey that drew me to it; but I don't expect everybody (or anyone) to like it. I brought out the colours in the first two because that was half the point of the photo; again, personal preference. I thought people would complain about the wall, as I didn't remember it being that bright, although it was taken during a very bright Summer's day, and the stones on the church really were very yellow.

I'm not sure what you mean by "intellectual photography", but I'll take it anyway :-)
