alexthornephotography
Hi,My local camera guy said it wasn't worth having my FTb QL CLA'd because thelight meter is broken. I was thinking about doing it myself. Specifically, Ineed to replace the light seals, and I'd also like to open the camera up andclean and lube. What stuff do I need and where can I get it? Thanks
User_502260
I have one FTb and two FTbN bodies. Essex Camera Service in Carlstadt, NJ overhauled one of the FTbN bodies for me. If your camera was not dropped from a great height and if the camera isn't heavily damaged from leaking batteries then there is a good chance the meter can be made to work. In most cases there is a problem with the wire which carries current from the battery compartment to the meter cell. A properly serviced FTb or FTbN can give many years of good service. I think you should have someone let you know whether the meter can be made to work before you take the camera apart yourself.
alexthornephotography
Thanks for your reply Jeff. They guy who owned the camera before me used it while he was in the Navy. Also, I have plenty of other cameras and I wanted to play around with this one just to see if I could bring it back to life. I just need to know what tools and materials will be needed to work on the camera and where to purchase them. Also, any online help on doing a CLA on this camera would be great as well. bob_sunley
The light seals are easy, just buy one of the $10 kits on the bay. Search photo.net for the sellers name. Other than that, the tools you need inc the service manual will easily cost you more than having it done. Micro tools will have some of the basic tools, if there are model specific ones, you might have to fabricate them.

zenit_zepplin
locate Tomosy's Camera repair book, I think he has some notes on FTb in Vol.II, Ftb is a pretty straight forward body to work on, except make sure to mark the position of the shutter speed dial before taking it off.
