sk_szekiat
One of the more popular markets in London went ablaze on Sat evening. I was lucky to have been there just moments before the blaze and thought i'd share some pictures of life moments before it all went up in smoke...
Click on image to enter my gallery
HarryBaker
A very sad business. My son had a stall there but fortunately moved to a more permanent shop a while back.

aplumpton
Good work. The disappearance of markets is an ongoing thing. Hopefully this one may be rebuilt before a supermarket is installed.
HarryBaker
Camden Market isn't the sort of market that can be replaced by a supermarket. There is, in fact, a regular supermarket just behind it!

sk_szekiat
thankfully i don't think the local planning council's going to allow that to happen anytime soon. Camden is a major tourist attraction afterall
andrewlamb
SK the market hasn't "all gone up in smoke". The fire was confined to the part of the market behind the Hawley Arms. All the places featured in the above photos are fine. I talked to a firemman outside the Hawley Arms, last night, and he said that the roof has gone, the seconod floor is badly damaged but the ground floor has largely survived which is something. sk_szekiat
Thats good to hear. When i went there on sunday afternoon, i was told that most of it behind the hawley was up in smoke. Granted though, camden market is quite big and spans a few market areas as well.
andrewlamb
The TV reports, om Saturday night, were understandably confused. There were stories that the fire had jumped the road but it wasn't clear which way and so on. I saw the fire, right at the start of the evening, when I tried to meet my wife at Sainsbury's (the glamour of it all). I couldn't get into the car park as the Police had made Kentish town road temporarily into a one way system. I almost get flattened by a double decker bus that was on the 'wrong' side of the road. It was weird and faintly depressing watching hundreds of young-ish people rush towards the scene of the fire merely to rubber neck and get in the way of the emergency services. Anyway, the upshot is that my personal favourite of the market, the little inner courtyard around the lock and by Dingwalls is safe and sound. This is one of the few parts of the market where I can walk with my dog. If I go into the stables part we get pounced on by Russian security guards.
