dan_k6
I bought my Powershot SD630 in August 2006. I bought it for the 3 inch screen and the overall smaller size. I always wished that the camera had a 28mm lens and/or IS. I didn't pay much attention to the P&S cameras since I got my DSLR in late 2006. Now I find myself carrying the smaller camera when I'm just walking down the street taking snapshots/group pics etc. I noticed that Canon has a camera with a 28mm lens AND IS. Do you think it makes sense to sell the SD630 for an SD870IS? Does IS really give you an advantage over non IS cameras. I feel the P&S cameras are good from ISO 80-200 and then you really see the noise so ISO 1600 on the 870IS is a non-issue for me. I just want to know if the SD870 upgrade is worth it. I know it has Digic III as opposed to Digic II. I don't know how much that is going to help. And as a side note...who do you feel makes the best P&S cameras that produce the best prints. I'd be open to a new model as well. Thanks
tommyinca
IMHO, unless you shoot a lot of subject which doesn't move or you can't keep your camera steady, "IS" is a bit over rated. 28mm however is a different story. If that matter to you (ie. keep finding yourself needing another step backward), it may worth up-grade for that.
davek57
The Canon SD800is will give you about everything the SD870 will, for much less ($260), as it's a 7MP model. The bump up in megapixels on the same size sensor will just increase noise levels, as well as price (~$300 USD for the SD870is). Both have the Digic III processor. The SD800 also has that tiny optical viewfinder, instead of the 3-inch screen of the SD870. I've been happy with the SD800.
