byron_fry1
Hey everyone, I want to buy a Canon 5d, I have a few questions for those who may have bought on ebay or elsewhere and how much should I expect to pay? I am in Canada and my major issue is how do I calculate border fees. I have someone in the US I could get it sent to if that would avoid it, but then are there problems with this as if the product is bad then I cant fight it properly? Does anyone have any guidelines or hints? I have found a few for about 1200, brand new in box, and I have to email them and they post buy it nows so I can buy. Is this a scam, because I see some buy it nows for 1800 or much more? Thanks everyone!
shambrick007
What do you think? For that price, YES it's a scam. Buy from B&H, pay the fees, be safe and not cheap.
Greg M
Sorry, I've been wanting to post that for a long time when I see people who post a query like this when, deep down, they know the answer without having to ask. Follow forums long enough and it becomes painfully obvious where the inspiration for the character George Costanza came from.... I'll be looking for your post in the neighbor recommendations section. mwtphoto
1800 is about the cheapest i have seen so far. there was one sold by a canadian on ebay last week. one of the benefits of buying from a private person is that you save the taxes. however i am always curious how an individual is selling a brand new item i.e. where did they get it from. Anything less than 1800 is likely a scam. get one from a local store that you can trust you may pay a little more but it is better to be safe. w_t1
Call your own govts customs to calc the fees! I'm not Canadian, but I bet it's on a CA govt website somewhere. Sorry, I don't have time to do the search for you.
mwtphoto
i believe that cameras are duty free coming into canada. so you will only be assessed pst and gst. there will also be a $5 handling fee from canada post for getting it out of customs. if the seller only uses ups watch out for large brokerage fees from ups. if the seller uses the usps then you will only pay pst, gst and the $5 handling fee. also make sure the warranty you get will be honoured in canada. mwtphoto
if you buy from a canadian dealer, but in a different province then you could save the pst.
