joe_ethridge
I agree with Barry's post. No offense to any other posts, but I still remember in the not so distant past, when a pro quality body and a standard 50mm lens was the norm. I'd take a 5D and 50mm f/1.8 over a Rebel and two L zoom lenses. I believe that the camera body is the foundation of the system and the lenses can always be added as needed. But then I also prefer using prime lenses over zooms. To each his own and good shooting.
avu
Jerry and Charles are, if not wrong, at least being very simplistic. The idea that it is the glass" that matters and the camera sensor size and quality are much less important is nonsense. There have been many tests to show that lesser glass on a larger sensor produces better IQ than better glass on a smaller sensor. But like everything in photography, it depends on precisely what you're looking for. They're all just tools with different uses. Often price correlates with quality, but only if you're asking it to do what it's specifically made to do. A $100 used prime lens might be MUCH more useful and MUCH higher quality than some giant expensive L like the 35-350 in the right situations.
