cory_zerkee
Hello everyone. I have mentioned before that I was in the market for a decent fast zoom for wildlife pics that won't break the bank. I have been looking at the Sigma 100-300mm f/4 as it seems to get excellent reviews from those who own it. My question is this. I have only found ONE place that has it in stock and that is here: http://www.willoughbys.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=1094SIG100T300F4O BUT, it is the non DG lens. The DG lenses are backordered everywhere until Mid Aril(ish). Is there a problem with using a non DG lens on my K100D? Should I wait for the DGs to arrive? All my other lenses (with the exception of my kit lens) are older SMC Pentax film lenses and they seem to work great, so I assume the Sigma would also. I just want to doublecheck. Thanks! denys_meunier1
Cory, the difference between DG and non DG is the correction of distortion and aberrations fot digital bodies and they fit both film and digital,Sigma said that, but there a lot of people in the pentax forum using old type of lens on digital body and works great,so my opinion if you have a DG or non DG its not a big deal, you'l have great result with a non DG lens.DC lens its another story, those are make for gigital only. michael_kuhne
If there is no major price difference, I would wait and get the new one, if possible. Even though a minor difference, why not have the latest additional technology- and maybe some other tweeks not mentioned in literature or specs. cory_zerkee
Thanks for the info/input guys. True, I SHOULD wait for the new one, but that months away and I don't want to think of all the shots I would miss between now and then. :)
mountainvisions
a few months is a long time if you have shots to take...for the price it's competitive with the Pentax oferrings and if you look at the quality, the 100-300 is a very hight respected lens. Personally I'd wait for SDM but I have to say if you need the lens, you need it. I was personally all set to buy it before SDM, but now I'll wait. rogerdaltx
@Justin - Regarding "I was personally all set to buy it before SDM, but now I'll wait." Do you know for sure Sigma is planning to support HSM / SDM in a Pentax mount? Where have you seen this?
cory_zerkee
Well I just picked up a mint condition Tokina AT-X 840 AF-II 80-400mm f4.5~5.6 off ebay. The price was right and from what I have read, it's an excellent lens for the buck. I will let you know how well it shoots when it arrives. :)
