steve_barrett
I got a new Leica MP body recently. When I use my late serial number 50mm Dual Range Summicron on it, there is some resistance when the lens is focused between the 25 feet and infinity distances. It feels like something in the body is causing the lens to 'bind' very slightly between those distances. When the same lens is on my M6, it focuses normally at all distances. Anyone else have this issue with the MP/50mm Dual Range Summicrom combination?
vincenzo_maielli
I have a Leica MP and i use with a DR Summicron from 1962 (48 cm as maximum short focus distance) without any problem. Ciao.
Rob F.
No problems with my DR #1586xxx on my MP.
kens
Without the lens, try pushing gently on the cam arm at the top of the lens mount in the throat of the body. Does it follow smoothly or do you feel a resistance at some point? Do you have another lens to try to see if you feel the same binding? There might a hang up in the rangefinder mechanism which should be adjusted by Leica.
steve_barrett
It appears the lens focus cam is coming in contact with the housing of the meter cell. This happens only when the DR lens is used.
kens
That's odd, Steve. My DR doesn't cause that, and there seems to be enough clearance (1 to 2 mm) between my cam roller and meter housing. If you bought the camera new I think you should have Leica take a closer look, or ask for a replacement body.
randy_lewis1
I had the same problem on a New Zeiss-Ikon with my DR Summicron. Seems it is the close focus cam. There are two cams, one for regular and one for close focus. I had the close focus cam cut down as I don't have the eyes and don't use the close focus feature. The DR won't work on the M8 either, but had not heard there was a problem on the MP.
steve_barrett
ken:it's actually the lens flange that contacts the meter cell housing, not the roller cam in the body.
kens
Ewwww...I get it. Yes, mine comes within a hair but doesn't touch the meter housing. I suppose it's the outer edge of the of the near-focus lens cam, yes? Maybe you can carefully file down the outer edge of the cam - not the face of the cam - to clear it. It's easy to see if you hold the shutter open, back removed, while focusing the lens to infinity.
kens
Just a very small amount off the leading 1/4 inch of the cam edge should do it, I would think. Almost like taking a small burr off the outer edge.
