dan_k6
Does anybody know the going rate for this lens. Assuming I can find one inexcellent condition with box, papers, etc.
zippy_doda
I?ll assume your looking for the older non VR version. I have seen the price for these going for about $450 (+/-50) in good condition.
dan_k6
Interesting. Would most of you go with this non VR as opposed to the new AF-S VR. I already have a 70-200VR so the 105mm for portraits or action is not a concern for me. Optically does the older D version produce the same sharp pictures? juanjo_viagran
I have the D and is an amazing lens, not only for micro/macro but also for portraits. I'm selling mine, if interested let me know. $550 SHIPPED.. http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc112/Juanjo_Viagran/for%20sale/Nikon%20105mm%2028D%20micro/ $450 for the VR is BS, unless you get a beat up to dead one.. cameralogic
I have no first hand exposure to wither lenses, but Thom and KenRockwell both seem to agree that the auto focus is poor on the VR edition. If I were you, I would go with the older 2.8D after reading the write-ups. http://www.bythom.com/105AFSlens.htm http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/105vr.htm Cheers [nathan]
dan_k6
do most of you confer that $450 +/-50 is the going rate for the non VR D lens?

tpernal
I own the VR 105 and it is truly an amazing lens. I often use the SB-800 hand held with the D200 hand held and get excellent results. Nothing beats a tripod.... but I have some truly striking photos to support my view.

hugh_davis
Daniel, A good place to check prices is KEH.com (also a good place to do business with, IMO). You may be able to get a little under their prices elsewhere, but for an idea of the used market price, I check them first. Looks like $450 on up depending on condition of the lens. Good luck, HWD
blumesan
If you will be using this lens mainly for micro & close-up work where (a) You will be using a tripod and (b) manual focussing is preferred; then AF & VR are little to no use. You can save a great deal by getting an AIS 105/2.8 micro.
walterh
Also if you use flash you do not need VR unless flash is a minor light source.
albinonflickr
A Micro lens that cannot take Nikon extension rings, or cannot be mounted on a bellows is a mistake, in my opinion. The lack of an aperture ring ('G') still baffles me.. VR is a nice feature to have, but a nice feature on a crippled lens.
dan_k6
Juanjo, wish I saw that lens earlier. I would have bought it. I guess I'll wait till next time.
richard_merritt1
I have both the old 105 and the VR and I continue to use them both. I find the VR has faster autofocus in macro but the old lens is easier to use MF. I do miss the aperture ring as it allows faster changes. The VR lens has allowed me to track small moving macro such as insects, keeping them in focus and with steadier framing. I find both lenses give sharp results. The VR gives more working distance at 1:1.
jorge_torralba2
I know the Nikkor is much more affordable than the Zeiss 100. But if you can spring the extra 1k and can live without the AF, the Zeiss 100 ZF is a pretty amazing lens. I am just starting to use it and find that focusing with it is so easy that I forget there are auto focus lenses out there. I know it is expensive but it is a great portrait lens as well as a macro with a 1:2 ratio. Some images here: http://www.nikoncamerauser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25 http://www.nikoncamerauser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23 Check out the fred miranda site as well for good deal on the nikon lens. Often people will sell them at a reasonable price there.
gizzo_sparkes
Would this lens work well for hockey? It seems to be a reasonable price as the 70-200 2.8 is too expensive for me. I see the nikkor 105mm 2.5 AI for a decent price or is that lens totally different from the 105mm micro 2.8d?
