paul.droluk
Having just acquired the 300/4-AFS, TC-14EII & TC-17EII, I performed the following comparison... the TC-14EII versus upsizing x 1.4, and the TC-17EII versus upsizing x 1.7. All tripod mounted, mirror up, f5.6, ISO 200 on a D300. These are 100% crops from the in camera JPEG files. Smart sharpened (0.8, 30) just prior to Saving for Web. The subject was a bed sheet, about 250 meters away (through a neighboring apartment window). The TC's performed very well... clearly sharper and cleaner than upsized versions, especially the 1.7x. Two23
Bedsheets through a neighbor's window? SO, did you get any pictures of what was happening on top of the bed? Kent in SD
ShunCheung
Oh, I missed the "shooting through a neighbor's window" part earlier. Your neighbor's privacy aside, are those shots through window glass? It shouldn't be that hard to find better subjects, like a distant building, trees .... paul.droluk
The way most people live in urban China, other apartments are about all you can see... in any direction. More so with a long tele being tested. This is the full image...<div></div>
dan_brown4
Thanks for posting, the TC17 combo looks like it's the way to go.
yoni_perlmutter
I didn't take shots of my neighbours' sheets when we lived in Chengde. But then I also didn't have a 300/4 and TC14EII with me. My longest lens then was a 180/2.8. Your results are similar to mine with the same set up (300/4 AFS + TC14E). f7 with the TC looked about as good to me as f5 without. Of course this was film, an F3 and F100 and through a Schneider loupe. I looked long and hard. After I returned home and scanned the film (Kodak positive) into TIFs the results were the same at 100%. I could go beyond this, but why would I? I sure miss Chengde and the people and the leeks drying out on the balconies and window sills . . . paul.droluk
Shun, there's a major problem using distant subject matter here due to the perpetually horrid air quality. I doubt I'll get to use this combo much here, but fortunately I do get to travel a bit.<div></div>
ShunCheung
Paul, I have sent you e-mail concerning this thread. As long as you are comfortable with the images you posted here, it is all fine by me. I wouldn't worry about it.
