les_barstow Posted January 4, 2008 Share Posted January 4, 2008 In macro, working distance and depth-of-field are two of your greatest challenges. DOF is critical for capturing an object like a flower that has great depth. Working distance is an absolute must when doing macro work with insects; it also helps ease lighting issues. These are competing aspects of macro photography; given the same aperture, you have to sacrifice DOF to get working distance. An opposing consideration: with the narrower DOF provided by longer lenses, your background is easier to defocus. Software now exists to composite multiple images with differing focal points into one image with a greater DOF.
