justin_reece
I'm trying to figure out what went wrong with this shot. It happened to a couplein the roll. They were 1 second and 1/2 second exposures at night, cable release. Delta 100, pushed to ISO 200. (I accidentally metered for 400). D-76 1-1. Hasselblad 500c/m, 80mm Thanks
borrel1
Flare from a chrome filter ring or the filter thread on your 80mm (if it's chrome)? - Børre Ludvigsen
justin_reece
There was no filter on the lens.

simus
Did it affect just one frame ? Antonio
q.g._de_bakker
Justin,

It is flare of some sort, no doubt about that.
The peculiar dark spot in the center probably is just a true rendition of the bright light that caused the flare itself, which, i suspect, might have a disk obscuring the lamp itself, throwing all light to the reflector behind the lamp, which in turn projects it outwards.

Can you post more (and larger) pictures of this phenomenon? q.g._de_bakker
P.S.

The "peculiar dark spot" of course isn't dark, just not affected by the flare. Sorry!
But you will have understood what i meant.
q.g._de_bakker
And another P.S.

Is what we see a fire engine coming round the corner?
If so, it indeed is a rendition of the rotating reflector inside the rotating light on front of the vehicle. And i bet all the other images that show the same then also have a rotating lamp in it.
cpj
Sometimes it just kills me to have to agree with QGdeB but I think he's right. Whatever it is it is moving, has lights on it, and it looks like the lights are moving too.
justin_reece
The thing coming around the corner is an old electric streetcar on tracks. It bounces a lot when it makes the turn. None of the lights are moving - just the whole thing. Here is a link: http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=2150891427&size=l
q.g._de_bakker
Well, so much for that theory then.

Whatever it is, the flare-free part is caused by an obstruction in the (flare) light's path/the shape of the reflector causing the flare.
It could well be that this annular flare is light reflected off the inside walls of the lens barrel.
