ajay_ukidve1
Hi, Today my D70s failed in a crirical photo session. After changing my Sigma 30/1.4 and putting on the Nikon 18-135 the camera focuses but shutter release does not take place but Err message is displayed both on inner and outer windows. Thereafter on releasing the shutter release button and again depressing it the shutter operates 3-4 times on its own and camera is ready to take another shot. It again focuses but on further depressing shutter release button Err message is displayed w/o operating shutter. I have checked the CF card, cleaned the lens contacts, battery is full, I have reset the camera. Nothing. One thing I have noticed is buffer shows 4 continuously w/o taking any pictures. Manual says it goes back to an authorized service centre in such a case. Any ideas. Thanks in advance. Ajay
rffffffff
I am not sure how to do it, but I would attempt two things before service: First is a hardware reset. I think there is a button on the bottom someplace, but I believe the instructions to do so are in the manual. Somewhere I read if you do the soft reset twice its a hard reset... Either way, I would try that. Second, take the lens off and inspect the internals, I think a stuck mirror, or perhaps a goofy shutter can cause a similar problem to the one you have. Fire the shutter while looking to see what happens. It might be obvious and easier to fix.. Good luck!
ajay_ukidve1
Thanks Robert. I tried resetting 4 times nada. Now as you suggested i will put in on manual remove lens and fire the shutter and see what happens. May be something will come about. Thanks a ton. ajay_ukidve1
Heres another stunner furthering the subject. The camera works perfectly when pointed straight up 90 degrees vertically. The moment I bring it down to horizontal may be 70 degrees from vertical it stops functioning and gives Err. Any ideas? As somebody wrote else where Err means keep your $$$ ready.
alan_huett
Sounds like you have a mechanical mirror problem. With the assistance of gravity (pointing camera upwards) the mirror assembly is able to operate, but held horizontally it cannot. I'm sure Nikon will be able to fix it, but it may cost you a few $$. ajay_ukidve1
Had to replace the complete shutter module now the camera is ok. It is not known what caused the problem. Cost 150 USD total including service charge.
