50mm f/1.4 AF problem

Anyone encountered an autofocus problem with a EF 50mm f/1.4? Since I bought it

in October the autofocus will just stop at random times. I twist of the focus

ring would bring it back online. Now, nada autofocus. I'm hoping this is a

freakish setting or something simple. I don't want to send it back.

Mine did the same thing to me today actually. The autofocus just stopped...I was in the middle of a session. I'm sending mine back.

WHy not, it's under warranty right? Not much else you can do. No one here can tell you the lens will work or not. It's all speculation. Canon can check it out for you and fix it if/as necessary...for free.

I had the same problem. It's a known bug on that lens. I didn't deal with it straight away so I had to pay out of pocket for the repair.

This is a well known and long time problem on this lens from the beginning. For whatever reason, Canon refuses to find a solution and continues to produce it as is. I'm on my third and last one, the first two failing because of the AF. When this one goes, I have an original metal mount 50/1.8 waiting to be put back in service.

Thanks for your input. I'll send it back, and think about an upgrade to the EF F/1.2L 50mm, or a downgrade to the f/1.8 50mm.

Don't bother with the 1.2L. It's really not worth the premium price. The 1.4 is a sweet spot to be in. The 1.8 is very nice and sharp for the price, but if you already have the 1.4, no bother downgrading.
