dick_costello
I've read most the postings in your forumns and downloaded tons of information from your sites. You fellows sure do good work. We will be visiting grand children in September in Orlando area but after a couple of days of that, plan to spend a week or two shooting birds, wildlife, flora etc. I have never visited Florida (to shoot) in September and wonder what the best places might be that early. <p> We plan to try Sanibel, Corkscrew Swamp,Ichetucknee and will probably run over to Merrit Island area while in Orlando. Traveling by van so will have "all of it" with us. The bug repellent too. Thanks!
don_baccus
As was stated in the other post on Florida, the best source by far for this information is the ABA guide to birding Florida. The ABA's website is at: www.americanbirding.org. Their guides give information on which birds you can expect to see in any given month, and far, far more detail than you'll ever get from us here. And the detail you would get would come from us reading our own copies of the book, for the most part! <p> If you don't want to mail-order a copy in advance, just buy one when your hit your first visitor's center. larry_korhank
The ichetucknee is one of the most beautiful spring runs in the country, but the crowds discourage a lot of wildlife, especially on the weekend. Wakulla springs (south of Tallahassee) would be a better place for birds and there is a nice lodge on the springs that you can stay at. St. Marks N.W.R. is nearby and can be the best birding spot in the state at times. For a more peaceful river experience near the ichetucknee, try the Santa Fe River river rise run. I'm doing a "Exploring Florida's Forest Ecosystems" web page starting with the Santa Fe River Flood Plain Forest. The page is under construction but you can see the beginnings at http://www.sfrc.ufl.edu/Extension/ExtInfo.html. Also in the Gainesville area try Paynes Prairie and Newmans Lake. Paynes Prairie is also a good spot to see gators and Newmans Lake has a fringe of old cypress trees (beware of snakes and wasps in the trees). larry_korhank
The Florida Game and Fish Commission has a nice "wildlife Viewing" section on their web page at http://fcn.state.fl.us/gfc.gfchome.html
