david_spivak2
In all of our previous calls for submissions, we have been blessed with several hundred photographers whose work really stands out, unfortunately, none of them have had photographs right for the cover of our Collector's Edition. So, with less than two weeks left before we go to press, here's what we're looking for: A portrait shaped image The image must intense/dramatic It must capture someone's attention within half of a second We would prefer the image be color, but black and white is acceptable The image must have enough space around the central focus of it to put our logo and several cover lines so not to disturb the image. See www.focusmag.info/preview for examples of previous covers we've done before. There is absolutely no fee for submission and being an advertiser is not required at all. This is 100% free. You submit the image(s), we tell you if we like it or we don't and that's it. If we wind up liking your image, we will publish a 4-page Focus Gallery of your work and give you a 50 image online gallery on photoconnoisseur.net for free. mharris
I suck shooting portrait shaped images but what the heck:

david_spivak2
Hi, Helen. Thank you for your submission. It's not what we're looking for at this time, but I must disagree with you on the statement about you sucking at taking portrait shaped photographs. They are each quite excellent. helen_horsley1
Sorry about the big files. Try try again.

helen_horsley1
David, Michael took the lovely black and whites. Photographers, I could use a tip on how to post these. Sorry for my big images. I am cropping to 4x6 and saving as jpegs with a file size approximating 100 kb. Michael, your images are stunning. Any help you could offer on how to post the right size image? Am feeling pretty silly.
ted_marcus1
While it's not like any of the sample covers, this image is portrait-shaped, intensely colorful, has room for your logo, and has captured the immediate attention of everyone I've shown it to. The full-sized image is, of course, much larger than this reduced version on my Web site.
david_spivak2
I guess what I really need is an object that people can center their attention on. That object must be intense/dramatic. The area around the object is where we'll place the cover lines and logo.
iancoxleigh
David:

I have carefully looked at your link of previous covers. They are predominantly B&W -- is there a reason for wanting a colour front this time?

Regardless, here is a possible colour option:

I am not sure whether or not your cover is exactly 4x5 of not. it appears to be closer to 4x5 than 4x6 and also to be wider than a B&W Magazine cover (just what I had in front of me).

This image is slightly longer than 4x5. It could have a edge mat that was slightly wider on the side than at top and bottom to allow it to be used on a 4x5 cover. This image is also available in B&W http://www.photo.net/photo/6609442

Below is a strongly toned B&W image with more usable negative real estate for titles and banner. It would be harder to crop to 4x5 for your cover. But, extra background could be created on the right hand edge to allow a 4x5 result.
david_spivak2
While these are both great images, I don't see anything dramatic/intense about them. Take a look at the eyes of the model from the Jock Sturges issue... her eyes are quite intense. The current issue, the image is amazingly dramatic. david_spivak2
The day I can post an image of a breast as the cover to my magazine and not get ripped to shreads from my distributor will be a great day. Until then, I can't put nudity on the cover..
