edward_karaa1
Is anyone here able to use this combination? Just curious to know since I have both and would like to gather some info before I get an adapter.
mwtphoto
check out this link. they have listed zeiss c/y lenses and there compatability with canon mounts. the 18mm is listed as iffy for the 5d - most likely there is a mirror clearance problem. i use many zeiss c/y lenses on my 350d with the happypagehk adapters from ebay. they have af confirm chips on them and work nicely. http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Contax_db.html
edward_karaa1
Thanks a lot for the interesting link and info. I'm already aware that the 18mm may not work with the 5D, but it seems there are some exceptions. I wouldn't mind buying an adapter and trying it, but I'm worried the mirror might hit the rear element and ruin the lens for me. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who is able to make it work and see how he does it. Cheers, Edward
JDMvW
I've found that I can try out full-frame adapters on an old EOS 650 that I bought on eBay for less than $30. It's a lot cheaper than doing it on a 5D ;) For what it's worth, my C/Y adapter works fine on my 20D bodies with a Qdos Series 1 telephoto zoom, but that's no surprise. sattler123
I read somehwere that you would have to modify (literally cut) the mirror in the 5D to accomodate the 18mm Contax. I love Contax lenses, but that would be too high a price to pay for me!
pgranone
Why use a manual lens? That sounds like a big hassle to me. I use the Canon EF 17-40 F4 and get great images with autofocus ability.
jcolwell
I use a SMC Pentax 18/3.5, but these links might help:
16-9.net Canon 5D Adapted Lens Compatibility lists
5D adapter for Contax, or for rollei
Canon 5D and Zeiss lenses - What to look for?
Zeiss/Oly -> 5D Compatibility List 5D adapter for Contax, or for rollei
matt_sallis
I believe the AE version of the lens is usually ok, but the MM version does have problems on some 5D's.
I would just buy a cheap adapter and try it. If the rear element doesn't protrude from the housing then no damage will ocurr if the mirror does touch the lens.
If you're worried about it then just tape a small piece of paper over the rear element before trying it.

It's impossible to tell without actually trying your own 5D, as the 5D's mirror box is not accurately engineered enough for consistency.
I've been very fortunate, as my 5D has had no mirror problems with any of my Contax lenses, including supposedly problematic ones like the 28mm f2, 50mm f1.7, 85mm f1.2 and 135mm f2.
