awindsor
The dpreview review of the Canon 40D is up. The most interesting point is theincreased dynamic range. It is 2/3 of a stop over the 30D and basically 1 stopover the D200. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos40d/
anesh
I've enjoyed mine from the moment I got it. This review illustrates why.
awindsor
I am thinking of getting one though the noise characteristics are not better than my 20D so I might hold off. The shutter release is much quieter though and that is something that bothers me in my 20D. I also would dearly like a spot meter. The bigger viewfinder is very attractive. This is a very mature photographic tool. The 40D addresses a couple of niggles I have with my 20D, which I love, though Canon still gives a Direct Print button and no single MLU button. I think that criticism may have been mentioned before by one or two people so I think Canon is just being stubborn.
conraderb
Can someone tell me to what degree having in-camera noise reduction ON will effect the buffer when shooting raw images? Canon states a 17 raw image buffer, and I heard that the buffer is significantly reduced when noise reduction is on, but I want to get a sense of what # that is. thanks, conrad
j_anon
"There isn't a single camera on the market which gains so much by shooting RAW and using Adobe Camera RAW to convert its images than the K10D. The difference is night and day and indeed the K10D in this comparison trumps the EOS 40D for detail which hints perhaps that Pentax are using a sensor with a lighter anti- alias filter (although if you look at some of the crops you can see some demosaicing artifacts)." zackojones
Conrad: 6 is the number my buffer is reduced to when shooting at ISO 3200 and High ISO Noise reduction enabled.
PuppyDigs
I don't care about a MLU button but would love to see the return of ECF and shiftable DEP mode. ECF would be especially effective in a body with all cross AF sensors. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
j_smith6
Another vote for ECF - it's great.
KenPapai
I read the whole review -- barely any mention of AF (it does talk about the new AF sensors) but nothing I could find about accuracy or speed of AF. It REALLY concentrates on ISO and noise. Personally I "hate" the direct print button and would _love_ an MLU button and couldn't care less about ECF (esp. in a crop sensor body, maybe in a FF I could appreciate that). johnson_d.
I unvote ECF. I like "Multi-controller direct" better.
keith reeder
Hey Anon - the important bit of your quote is this: "if you look at some of the crops you can see some demosaicing artifacts" The K10D examples in the review simply look over-sharpened - and they still hold less actual detail than the equivalent 40D shots. fourfa
true, no mention of what I find the most important aspect of the 40D - 9 cross-type AF sensors. DPReview has never dealt with that in their reviews.
jason_hall4
I'm sold. Jason
david_lau3
I am glad to find out 40D has 9.1EV dynamic range when shooting jpeg, and 11EV when shooting RAW. This is very close to negative film already.
uncle_ziba
The content is interesting but am I the only one who finds dpreview white on black font ridiculously hard on the eyes?
jason_hall4
Does not bother me at all. Jason
