Gitzo G1155T

I once had a Gitzo 1155T lightweight travel tripod which the local camera store

tells me has been discontinued.

They say that the replacement for the 1155T is the Gitzo GT-1540T Traveler 6X

Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs (Rapid Column) - Supports 9.9 lbs (4.5 kg). Is anyone

familiar with both models. I loved my 1155. Will I be as happy with a 1540?

Thanks.

The new 6x tripods have locking collars that are faster, easier and more secure to use than the older versions. Furthermore, the legs are keyed internally to prevent rotation.

The Gitzo series 1 is not stiff enough for consistent results with a 200mm lens. You need level ground and a calm day. A Series 2 is better, but I recommend a Series 3 "Systematic" if you have but one good tripod. The new GT-3540S weighs only 3.8 pounds and is 21 inches long when collapsed. It fits easily on a backpack and is actually easier to carry by hand than smaller tripods (there's enough room between legs to carry it by one leg).

The 1540 doesn't extend quite as high and doesn't close quite as short as the 1155T. However, it has only 4 leg sections hence is a lot stiffer. I suspect Gitzo determined the 1155T couldn't really handle the weight for which it was specified.

For what it's worth, here's a comparison table of similar models I used when making my decision a few months ago. It took me a while to assemble this table because Gitzo isn't very well organized; their US and international sites were inconsistent and a local dealer was no help (they didn't even know the 1540 existed). The 3001 in the first row is a Bogen, and was what I wanted to replace.

To echo what Edward said, the new locking system is very nice.

I tend to have a travel tripod and a home one.

Accept the pros and cons per situation.

I had a look of the 1026 I think or something at a store, here, I arn't in the USA so the old stuff still here and it does cost 2x as USA. For a look, as I get them in overseas when I travel.

I personally think a 3 series is good then a travel version like the Gitzo traveler or the Feisol travel one but the Feisol does not fold back unless you get that one that does. I haven't seen the 1026 and not sure if the Gitzo Traveler is also like it, but the 1026 legs is amazinly thin. If I had a thick tip marker that may of been thicker than it. So that worries me even for travel, my Feisol seems more stablier.

If I can turn the clock back I get a 3 or 5 series CF Gitzo and a traveler series Gitzo CF if legs arn't that skinny or a Feisol.

At the mo I have a 2 series but now I think I prefer a 3 or a 5 series and use my Feisol at travel. Initially I thought the 2 series would be good overall, Thom Hogan said so as my longest lens is 200mm, but as a travel lens due to the style of my traveling, I need a more portable tripod. The tripod doesn't fit inside my daypack which is all my cargo when I go overseas.

The one thing I like about Feisol is within 40cm folded without head, no centre column and its CF and its cheap and it has thermal wraps on it.
