jasonsmith
I am currently in the first week of a 3 week holiday in Italy for my Honeymoon. Unfortunately yesterday I had an accident and slipped down some stairs in Italy into the Grand Canal with my Camera equipment. My D200 and 24-120mm lens were completely submerged and could not be revived. Unfortunately I did not bring a backup body. I still have a few Nikon lenses so was going to try and pick up another DSLR here. A D40 or D80 would probably get me by until I get home. I am currently in Venice and travelling to Verona tomorrow. I will pass by Milan the following day. Can anyone assist in directing me to a photography store in Milan where I might be able to pick up a basic Nikon DSLR, hopfully at a reasonable price. thanks
Jerry_
Have you tried a Google search for camera stores in Milan or Verona? My guess, a fully-stocked store would be found in Rome, or any of the larger cities in Italy. As for a budget price ___?
thomas_hardy1
From P Greenspun's travels.... In Venice "Foto Aguiari at Strada Nova 4302 in Cannaregio (tel 522-4031), just across the Grand Canal from the Rialto Markets (if you take the gondola traghetto, you'll be practically on top of the store). Here you can buy Fuji consumer and professional film, a Canon EOS-5 body, or even a Rolleiflex. If they don't have what you need, ask for directions to another shop nearby." Good luck I saw a camera store in Florence while walking through the middle of town, but that's a little far from where you are, I think. Also, ask some local people. johnw436
Man, that's awful! I'm sorry to hear what has happened. I will be in Rome and Verona two weeks from now. Sorry I can't help with your camera- but if you have any ideas about great photos you wanted let me know and I'll gladly do the best I can, and I'll send you a CD/DVD when I get back. I'm no professional, but you're welcome to whatever I can manage to capture. Awful what happened to your rig. I was debating on leaving the backup at home due to weight. Not anymore! mileri
Jason, I'm sorry to hear abou that... A good source for a Nikon DSLR like a D40 or D40X is "Mediaworld" - I live in Italy (north of Milan) I often buy from them, they are generally competitive and reliable. You can find Mediaworld stores in Venezia (Mestre), in Verona (S.Giovanni Lupatoto) in Milan (one is located in Viale Carlo Troya 18 another in Viale Umbria with Via Colletta, a third one in Via Pitteri, 84 with Via Rubattino); again, Mediaworld stores in the province of Milan (Cinisello Balsamo, where I usually go - the nearest to me). Have a look at their website www.mediaworld.it, it won't be difficult to locate the store that suites you better, even though the website is only in Italian. What it is, I guess you are unlikely to find a camera body only - you are more likely to find the D40 or D40x kit with the standard 18-55mm lens. Hope this will solve your problem please let me know if there's anything else that I can do in order to help - enjoy your honeymoon and show us your best photos! jasonsmith
Thanks so much everyone for your help with this. I have picked up the emails in Verona so willhead over to Media World on the way out. Will try and pick up a Nikon DSLR or maybe even a Canon G9. My wife has a Dony Cybershot but its fairly limited and not possible to easily adjust exposure.
frank uhlig
Maybe it is a sign from heaven that you ought to spend time with your wife and not with your gear. Just enjoy a picture-less honeymoon, how romantic and picture perfect! Sorry about the loss, though, and good replacement luck when back home ... matthew_newton
Good luck with the replacement. I do remember that bringing my Olympus OM-1 on my honeymoon almost started a couple of fights. My wife was a little ticked that I spent so much time taking photographs instead of simply enjoying my time with her (I did when we were on the cruise ship and not staring something picture worthy right in the face). She was probably right, but its hard when you wander places like Merrakech or the Canary Islands to not be snapping pictures like crazy.
jasonsmith
Thanks guys - figured that I had spent enough quality time with the new wife so picked up a D40 for 479 Euro which is a good price. Thanks for your help - particularly to Emmanuele for the tip about Media World much appreciated.
berg_na
I'm glad to see that you found what you were looking for, a happy ending to a dramatic opening. I dropped a lens cap into the Grand Canal on my first visit to Venice, and I'll bet that lots of other photo equipment lie at the bottom of the canal. I was there again a few weeks ago, it's such an interesting place.

matthew_newton
I have a lens cap sitting at the bottom of the river Thames. Only camera gear I have lost...so far. I almost lost a rear lens cap and hat at Navy Pier in Chicago taking a picture of the ferris wheel...but I managed to find them on the table I had left them on 15 minutes before when I went off to setup my tripod and forgot to grab them. mileri
Hi Jason - I'm glad you solved your problem. I guess you picked up Mediaworld's offer on Nikon D40 - 479,00 eur with standard 18-55mm is a good price indeed, hard to beat in Italy as of now. Enjoy the rest of your honeymoon and please advise me if you post any photo here so I can see! Regards, Emanuele
