amol
Hey, I got a Canon ST-E2 recently. I am using a Rebel XT and a 430EX. Using the 430EXin slave mode everything appears to work as planned. I have read several places that the Canon ST-E2 can be used to assist infocusing. My understanding was (Correct me if I am wrong), that I could use theST-E2 without the 430EX, it would help with focusing in low light situations. How do I do this? I checked my manuals, nothing there. I attach the St-e2 to myXT, and it does help me focus. But it sets an exposure for a flash picture. Theviewfinder shows a flash icon. So far, it underexposes the picture, becausethere is no "flash" to fire. Is there a Custom Function or switch that willallow it to focus, and set exposure for natural light. Is this feature onlyavailable on certain camera bodies? Thanks,Amol
PuppyDigs
The prosumer bodies--Elan 7E, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D--have a CF to disable flash/enabled AF assist for ST-E2 or Speedlites. Thus no ambient light exposure reduction. I don't own a Rebel series but I assume you checked and no CF. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
colinsouthern
NEVAC aside, I would have thought that it would only change the exposure/metering if you were in one of the creative modes - in the likes of Av / Tv / M modes it shouldn't have any effect on exposure/metering. (Be sure to enable HSS) Cheers, Colin
digitmstr
Right, the flash and ambient exposures are separate in the creative modes so, it shouldn't matter (unless, like Puppy mentioned the Cf function is causing the under xp).
PuppyDigs
Actually NEVAC is exactly the problem with using AF assist from a Speedlite or ST-E2 without flash disabled. Of course you can dial in extra EC to make up for it. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
bluphoto
Perhaps this is a dumb question and I'm going to kcik myself when I find out, but can someone please tell me what NEVAC is? thanks Guy
amol
I think, it is meant to be NEVEC. http://www.eosdoc.com/manuals/flash/NEVEC/
