Bikes, Blues, & BBQ took place this past week/end, 10-3 thru 10-6. It's been my

yearly thrill-ride for the last 4 years, a perfect storm of machines, people,

colors, action, etc., to cut my teeth on. This year, I shot very little, and

still not sure why. I think... I think it's because I've conquered some

technical challenges that previously had me hungry for opportunities to shoot,

especially the last two years. Still love my camera and photography, so, lack of

hots for one specific event doesn't bother me.

At any rate, I took it easy, relaxed, enjoyed people-watching, be it

bike-related or market folk. A few nice captures in the bunch, including Jesse

from West Coast Choppers. I think the big kid with the "God created Harley"

might be the pick of the litter.

All Nikon D70s. Various lenses: Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, Nikkor AF IF-ED 18-35, and

the Nikkor AF-D 80-200mm f/2.8

Getting my light where I want it at night, thus improving my ability to shoot where even TMZ pushed to Hell and back would do me no good. Progressing to the point that I can shoot full-manual under those conditions. Working on my directional lighting (flash in hand or on a monopod verses shot on-camera), and putting what I want in the frame, instead of shooting wide, cropping, etc., or being more concerned with "the rules" of composition. Other minor issues.

One other item, learned this weekend, was how to get more bang out of my D70s. The output at high ISO (640 or better) in low-light conditions was terrible. Made me hate the D70s and turn to the F4s with TMZ time and again. Trouble being, I like color, and I don't like to use B&W when I really want color output.

I went out for a bit on Thursday, late, and shot some concert stuff from the pit. The first shots were, as anticipated, quite bad. Frustrated, I dialed in close to a stop in + compensation, and there it was. Why I didn't think to do this before, I'll never know. At any rate, my opinion of the D70s for such work has changed. Images included.

I carry 3 speedlights: a single SB25, and two SB26 units. The 25 is pretty much my main light, using the SB26s as needed for backlights or other slaved application. Only used a single for the stuff above. I hold the SB25 in my hand, sometimes mount it on a monopod. It's tethered to the camera via a synch-cord. This allows me to have great control over the light, much better than shooting on-camera flash, be that pop-up or in the shoe. There are times when shoe-mount is the way to go. But, if I can work with the flash in hand, I will go that route.

Thank you for the comment, Barry.
