uncle_ziba
Here is a quick "next" lens selection algorithm that I found works for me, with the help of sorted lens list below. There are 67 Canon EOS lenses in the lineup (including extenders and shift). Shouldn't be that hard to make a choice ;-)
1. Find the lenses with a focal length I want
2. Narrow down by selecting the aperture (wider aperture means heavier and more expensive glass)
3. Decide IS vs non-IS. Zoom vs Prime. Consider Sigma/Tamron/Used alternative
4. Search 8600 photo.net/eos threads for opinions about candidate lens
5. Read about it more at http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/ and kenrockwell.
6. If not decided, Start over at step 1. Or *may be* post a new lens question.

Extender EF 1.4x II
Extender EF 2x II
Life-Size Converter EF
EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM
EF 14mm f/2.8L USM
EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye
EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM
EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM
EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
EF 20mm f/2.8 USM
EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
EF 24mm f/1.4L USM
EF 24mm f/2.8
TS-E 24mm f/3.5L
EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM
EF 28-105mm f/4.0-5.6 USM
EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM
EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM
EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II
EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II USM
EF 28mm f/1.8 USM
EF 28mm f/2.8
EF 35mm f/1.4L USM
EF 35mm f/2
TS-E 45mm f/2.8
EF 50mm f / 1.2L USM
EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
EF 50mm f/1.8 II
EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro
EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM
EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM
MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM
EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
EF 70-200mm f/4L USM
EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III
EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM
EF 80-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II
EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM
EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
TS-E 90mm f/2.8
EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
EF 100mm f/2 USM
EF 135mm f/2.8 with Softfocus
EF 135mm f/2L USM
EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM
EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM
EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM
EF 300mm f/4L IS USM
EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM
EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM
EF 400mm f/5.6L USM
EF 500mm f/4L IS USM
EF 600mm f/4L IS USM
ralph_jensen
I've never found "Rockwell's Reactions" to be very thoughtful or rigorous. For Canon-compatible lens reviews, I like fredmiranda.com (no objective measurements, but a large enough sample that one can get a good feel) and - for more objective measurements - the-digital-picture.com, photozone.de, and wlcastleman.com. I think this forum fills a role especially when building a system and filling in perceived gaps in one's kit.
jim_larson1
Yeah. . who ever builds a kit from scratch? It is ALWAYS ad-hoc. Mine certainly was. A Pair of zooms. Then a prime. Then a zoom, a bunch of primes. . .and then some more zooms. Throw in a few flash units. . .bankrupcy.
w_t1
This worked for me for 20 years until gore invented the internet. Thanks Al. All these opinions and reviews are well and good, but you gotta turn the pc off and get out and take pictures.
denisbergeron
Forget about Rockwell his opinion are in best funny. try http://www.fredmiranda.com/ or http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html is the place to evaluate lens but W.T is right. Turn The Pc Off. We should create TTPO day .
jason_hall4
Better have it the same day as no TV day!
denisbergeron
Zibadun,
I look at your list, and you forgot something very important. You have third parties that do lens for Canon.
Take a look at Sigma and Tamron line-up, they have some good lens that Canon doesn't make and they are very good
I'm thinking at the Sigma Fisheye 8mm f3.5 or the Sigma 12-24 (rectilinear) or the Tamron Fisheye zoom, or the Big Sigma Lens (50-500, 300-800, etc.)
And don't forget the Russian or european manual focus lenses that work on EOS with a lot of sharpnest. leopoldstotch
Besides FM, the-digital-picture also has very good reviews. As mentioned, Rockwell is best for a laugh.
alexdi
I like your list, except the parts about "find," "narrow," and "decide."
uncle_ziba
Denis, good point but I thought the list would be too long if I added all of the 3rd party lenses. I guess if "step 1" fails one might want to look at non canon brands. So David are you saying that people who read and ask questions but never quite figure out what they want lack the basic decision making skills? Are we wasting time trying to answer their posts? Time to go laugh at Ken Rockwell, who takes a hundred times nicer photographs than I do. ;)
alexdi
Lighten up, guy. It was humor.
uncle_ziba
David I thought you were. My response was tongue in cheek too. Must be one of those internet things that don't come across. Have a good one...
