littlemike
Right now I'm using a PCMCIA reader to pull images off my SD cards onto my laptop's HD. I need something faster, doesn't need to go onto the laptop, just into storage so I can wipe the card for the next batch of shots.
Ed_Ingold
PCMCIA card readers are slower than anything except direct connection with the camera. Any USB2 or Firewire card readers will be faster, and there is little difference between them. Make sure it is USB2 and not USB1, or your coffee will get cold. studor13
I just "upgraded" to a USB2 CF card reader from USB1. The difference for a 2GB card is more than Ed's coffee going cold. It's more like a small nap. USB1 was 40 minutes. USB2 takes 5 minutes. I don't know what I was thinking. The new unit cost me about $15.
wolf_weber
What cards, how fast are they..? It's not just the card reader, as U probably know. I am not in the habit of pushing 1 product over another. But a fast card, like my Extreme III, needs a corresponding gizmo. When I do everything right (..!) it only takes about 2 minutes to transfer, say, a good 100 10.3 MB Raw images to my desktop. I still have a new, unopenend (sealed), full warranty, Belkin USB 2.0 8-in-1 Media Reader & Writer to be obtained for $ 10,- plus whichever cost of shipping. Wasn't the correct model for my cards, for which I had to get another reading device. The Belkin will go to charity on Friday, unless someone gets in touch with me...
