yakim_peled1
14/2.8 MTF: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=151&modelid=7300 14/2.8 II MTF: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=148&modelid=15670 This is what I call a VERY significant improvement. I hope its flare resistance was improved as well. I wonder if it is far better than the new Nikon 14-24/2.8 because that one is a zoom and 400$ cheaper, making it more attractive. Happy shooting,Yakim.
14mm 2.8l
Agreed Yakim, a 14mm-24mm 2.8 for less money than Canon's newly redesigned 14mm 2.8L II is very appealing. Will this Nikon superwide angle zoom be usable on Nikon film cameras too? I was told by the Canon rep a few months ago the newy redesigned 16-35mm 2.8 L II would be perfect on canon film cameras also but this seems counter intuitive to me. fourfa
the MTFs on the new Nikon look unbelievably good: http://nikonimaging.com/global/products/lens/af/zoom/af-s_zoom14-24mmf_28g/
jon_austin
Wow, a 12-24/2.8 would be awesome (assuming good performance). I suppose the Nikon version is a DX (cropped image circle) model?
fourfa
there's an older Nikon 12-24/4 DX. this is a brand new 14-24/2.8. Full frame. One thousand grams. Big fella.
gary_ferguson1
The 14mm is one of my most used Canon lenses, I'll certainly be upgrading to the new one. The current 14mm is a very, very good lens, but based on the MTF curves the new 14mm looks to be the industry gold standard, this is Leica territory. yakim_peled1
I do not get it. Assuming the MTF curves represent the real world results, how can a zoom be so much better than the prime? Knowing Nikon ones are tested while Canon ones are calculated, this seems even more surprising. Happy shooting, Yakim.
peter_langfelder
Yakim, be realistic. Although the MTF curves are supposed to represent something truly objective and well-defined, they are highly suspicious. Look at the MTF of the 50/2.5 macro or 100/2.8 macro. Do you really think these are that much worse than the new 14/2.8, or the 17-40? Is it a coincidence that MTF graphs of older lenses typically look worse than those of newer lenses even though user reports indicate otherwise? I wouldn't trust Canon's MTF graphs.
