not able to mount C/Y Zeiss lens to D30 via adapter; what's going on?

Hello,

<br><br>

I just got one of these C/Y Zeiss -> Canon EOS lens adapters:

<br><br>

<IMG SRC="http://i15.ebayimg.com/04/i/04/76/a6/d9_1_b.JPG"></IMG>

<br><br>

And I'm not able to mount my manual focus C/Y 50mm f1.4 Zeiss lens onto my D30

(not 30D, D30). I can mount the adapter to the lens just fine, but once this is

done, the lens+adapter won't mount on the D30. Similarly, I can mount the

adapter onto the D30, but once this is done, I can't mount the Zeiss onto the

D30+adapter.

<br><br>

Anyone know what's going on? Is my issue with the lens, the adapter, or the

camera?

<br><br>

Thanks,

<br><br>

Drew

I use an adapter just like this on my Contax/Zeiss 85/1.4 onto a 10D. I will try mounting it on my Elan IIe to see if I have problems with that earlier body. The adapter always goes on the lens first. I once had a Nikon 20mm lens with an extra bit of metal on the back which stopped me from mounting it on the 10D even though it fit the Elan fine. Any kind of protrusions on your lens?

The little piece that stops down the diaphragm (the aperture blades), but that's pretty much it.

FYI, this had me frustrated (I'd been waiting on these individual pieces for a long time, and for it not to work once I had everything- ugh), so I was able to somewhat fashion them all together in such a way that the lens is now sitting on the camera, but the mount is very tenuous- the lens isn't clicked into place onto the adapter, and the adapter isn't clicked into place on the body. Takes pictures just fine, however (this was what I was mainly interested in testing).

I have a C/Y 35-70 VarioSonnar 3.4 that I have used with my 20D and 5D, using a black

adapter. I just dug out my D30 and it fits just fine - sounds like that rules out a systematic

incompatibility with the D30 (not that you'd expect it anyway if the EOS mount is consistent).

Must be the lens or adapter. What is it that "won't mount"? You can't turn it or it won't lock

or you just can't get it into the mount opening?

It won't turn, like something's blocking its path. The lens sits flush against the camera, it just won't turn to the point that it 'clicks' into the camera.

Hmmm, I'd say return the adaptor and buy a new one. I have both a fotodiox and a Haoda C/Y to Eos adaptor and have no problem putting either adaptor on my 30D or my 5D. I also have a M42 to eos adaptor that works just fine. I'd return what you've got for a refund and try a different vendor.

Andrew,

If the D30 is anywhere like the 10D, then there are a lot of lenses that won't mount on it. It's not the adapter itself, since

you were able to mount the adapter onto the body without the lens. The opening on the 10D body is quite small due to the crop factor. Quite obvious if you compare it with a film EOS body. Anything protruding from the rear of the Contax lens will get in the way of the "extra fat" inside the mount. John, are you sure you can mount the Zeiss 85/1.4 onto your 10D? I'm surprised. Maybe only when you focus closely?

By the way, beware of chipped adapters. I probably fried my EOS-1n with one such adapter. See my recent post below.

Thank you. The C/Y Zeiss 50mm f1.4 is a very common lens, though. It's a standard lens and I've heard no reports of compatibility problems with this lens, even for early DSLRs like the D30. It's not like I'm trying to mount an exotic wide like an 18mm f4 or a fast telephoto like a 100mm f2.
