Advice for 3 weeks in Italy - October

We have decided to spend 3 weeks in Italy for our Honeymoon which I am very

excited about. I was there 11 years ago (before the Euro made it expensive)

and spent a few days in Venice, Rome, Florence Tuscay and the Amalfi Coast. We

will definately be going back to Venice, and a few of those locations but I

would like to visit some other other places. We will be hiring a car.

I am looking for advice on your top photo locations in Italy. I would like to

spend some time in a place where I can capture traditional Italian life - I am

thinking maybe Sicily.

I was also looking to get a lightweight tripod - I assume Manfrotto is

Italian. Would they be cheaper in Italy.

I have travelled in Italy many times, and have made some of my best photographs there. I strongly urge you to consider Sicily. Palermo is a very good photographic subject. I know of few other places with its peculiar history--from Greek to Carthaginian to Roman to Norman French--all are reflected in its architecture and culture. Other Sicilian sights of great interest include Agrigento with its fabulous Greek temples, Monreale (near Palermo), Siracusa, and Taormina, which is one of the most lovely spots in Italy and features a well-preserved Graeco-Roman theater. I also recommend an excursion from Florence to Siena and also, if you have the time, to San Gimignano, the "city of towers." Finally, if time allows, a little time in Naples is worthwhile. You can take the boat to Capri, which is lovely and unlikely to be as crowded with tourists in October. Also in the vicinity of Naples, the ruins at Pompeii are a must-see; I have visited there three times and still haven't "scratched the surface" of what there is to discover there.
