just had the same thing happen to my 17/85, that's how it started and then would take one pic fine, the next one over-exposed, then a good one, then a completely blank white one, then error 99 again, all taken in "Priority Mode". camera works fine with all other lenses. Sent to canon and cost of repairs was $93. and it should be back here tomorrow. (Fedex 2nd day from Canon) When I get the paperwork back and see what they did, I'll get back here and let all know. Al

Hi All,

First of all thanks for your interest in the matter.

Secondly, I have contacted a Canon Aothorized reapir center locally and they told me that the 17-85 has a flexible wire strap that moves every time you zoom in and out. With use this wire tends to break. I have damaged only a part of the strap that is why it is not working from 17-24 and works perfectly from 35-85.

The repair center told me that this is quite a common problem with this lens.

Have sent in yesterday for repair and should be ready by Tuesday next week. Will keep you informed !
