alan_wilder1
I know it's a dumb question, but has anyone had any experience with Leica USA regarding shutter curtain replacement from a sun burn hole under the 2 year extended warranty after the initial 3 years of Passport coverage? Technically I assume it falls into the abuse catagory but I'm not sure how strict they are in these matters.
joshschutz
how the hell did you burn your shutter curtain.
Rob F.
"how the hell did you burn your shutter curtain." --Josh, if you don't know, you are next! You burn the shutter by allowing the lens to point at the sun for a moment too long. There are only two kinds of Leica photographers: those who have burned their shutter, and those who will. I've been lucky so far, after 50 years of Leica photography; but I keep wondering when my turn will come up.
peter_n1664876959
Yes it should be covered Alan. Extended is the same as regular, even if something is your "fault" i.e. you drop the camera Leica will fix it FOC under the terms of the warranty. alan_wilder1
Thanks Peter, I hope you're right. The wording of the extended warranty seemed a bit more restrictive than passport warranty.
bill_carriger2
Yes Alan, it is covered. I just had mine repaired a few months ago. Bill
Uncle Goose
I wasn't even aware this was possible, I guess it goes for some other camera's too.
alan_wilder1
Bill who did you speak to about the repair at Leica USA? I just spoke to Dave Elwell and he says it's a billable repair of about $400 since the extended warranty only covers normal wear and tear, not damage to the curtain as in this case. bobtodrick
Pretty sure it's not covered...it is not a camera fault.
bill_carriger2
Alan, now that I think about it my M7 was still under standard warranty. I forgot the initial warranty is for 3 years, so it would have been under that still. But I did send my M7 in and had the shutter curtain replaced and CLA'd and it didn't cost me a cent. Sorry, I haven't looked at the warranty card in a while I guess.
