Another D80 Failure: 2nd post on a different cam bod

I am here again with the same problem on my other Nikon D80 posted at

http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00LI10. Same problem

during a shoot yesterday, 7/7/07. Must be the 7's. My LCD died, the cam died

just shooting a reception/party at a country club under normal environment and

conditions. Fortunately again, I have two backups and my assistant saved my

behind. For any of you ever wondering why we carry around multiple bodies and

lenses, well there you are. But, I do this for a living. I spoke with Nikon

extensively today and they are thinking it may be on of my EN-EL3e batteries

causing this problem. For you tech heads smarter than me, what do you think?

Here are the facts: I bought the USA cam bod from B&H 8 months ago; I baby my

gear; I did do all resets; I did try all batteries, all to no avail. It is

very odd to me that this same problem would occur on a different cam bod. I

am sending the cam and all batteries back to Nikon for service. BTW, I know

many have had problems with Nikon service. I have not, they have been very

good to me, but I have sent very detailed info to them, this being only the

third service issue in 35 years of shooting Nikon. I have called or emailed

all of my other pro and enthusiast shooters who have D80's and all are

satisfied. I love this cam and it gives me excellent results for the field

that I work in: sports, portraits, corporate product shots, press kits, promo

photos, and the arts. After extensive research, I have not found anyone else

who has had this problem and neither did Nikon show this in their records for

a D80, except for my previous cam I sent in. Have any of you experience this

or similar problems with a D80? Any thoughts would be appreciated. What, go

Canon?

David, I had something happen with my D80 that may or may not be related. I bought the D80 the first week it was available. I have three batteries. One day about a month ago, after charging one of the batteries, I put the battery in the camera, and all I got was the batter indicator blinking across the LCD again and again. But nothing on the camera worked. However my other batteries worked fine. I contacted Nikon about this, and they have asked me to send the battery to them.

I did an extensive search at Nikonians and failed to find any threads related to LCD failure and complete camera failure on a D80 with and without battery cause or lack thereof. If there are, would you be so kind to provide a link link? I found related posts of people having problems with batteries, the normal EL strings, but nothing that indicated complete camera failure. Thanks.

Michael, thanks for providing the link, but that thread in Nikonians is about a "False Low Battery Indication" on the D80. It is a long thread and I only checked a few posts there. Apparently some people can fix that problem by cleaning the electronic contacts on the mount, which is a common fix to a lot of electronic contact problems anyway.

David's problem is that the entire camera fails. So it is not clear to me that his problem is the same as "false low battery."

Michael, yes, the entire LCD failed. Both the top LCD and the main rear LCD. None of the camera function buttons work. This malfunction on a different D80 than before. I have 4 batteries, none worked. My other D80 that is back from Nikon from the same malady is working fine. However, all 4 previous batteries and the current failed D80 are on their way to El Segundo. Thanks for the link, I had already saw that. I have found nowhere on the internet of any similar problem via photo.net, Nikonians, NPPA, Google, etc. I just hope that it is a faulty battery. The chances of getting two lemons with the exact same malfunction is highly improbable. Of course, it was 7-7-07. Better than 6-6-06. Just a joke. Thank you Shun, I did and keep my contacts clean both on the mount, batteries, and charger. I am AR.

Hello David,

Just out of interest, what was the outcome from Nikon on the first repair?

And did you get any feedback already on the second repair?

It is interesting to know if both failures are similar or have a similar root cause.
