kenneth_amorino
I have two questions about my Burke and James Grover camera. My first question was what size lens board do I need for this camera, is it the same as the calumet? The second question is how do I find out what size shutter/lensboard I need for a lens? I am trying to find a shutter for my Schneider Symmar-S 210mm f5.6. Thanks in advance.
ronald_moravec1
Calumets take 4x4 boards 1/8 thick. There is a 1/64 female grove light seal. I have made many from aircraft plywood obtained from a hobby shop. It most likely is a #1 shutter. Cal boards can be purchased with the #1 hole predrilled. if you are going with home made, measure the threads and drill a series of intersecting holes and file to round. Seal and paint. Richard Ritter can make boards. http://www.lg4mat.net/ I have some Cal boards and a 16" rail camera for sale
michael_briggs2
You can find a lot of information, even about older lenses, on Schneider's website, e.g., http://www.schneideroptics.com/info/vintage_lens_data/index.htm. Also see the pull-down menu from "Photography." Following the trail to the 210 mm Symmar-S, http://www.schneideroptics.com/info/vintage_lens_data/large_format_lenses/symmar-s/data/1,5,6-210mm.html, it was sold in various size 1 shutters. Did you buy a Symmar-S in barrel, or is the shutter damaged? If the later, perhaps it can be repaired. You can also identify the size of a shutter that you need, or the shutter that you have, by comparing to the dimensions given in the table at http://www.skgrimes.com/products/index.htm. ragc
For my boards I use regular 1/4" plywood and use a table router to make the lightseal edge to the necessary thickness. There are some adjustable size circle drill bits out there, although harder to find than the fixed size bits. I have one that will drill holes up to 2" in diameter. This has been large enough for my lenses. As for barrel lenses, the shutters are so expensive it's better to buy the lens mounted on a shutter already (of course this advice is useless if you already bought your lens). I bought myself a cheap Anniversary Speed Graphic so I could use my barrels with the focal plane shutter.
