Protecting images in Lightroom

Recommended Posts

Burn all your images to CD or DVD as soon as they're imported into your system. Once it becomes habit, it won't be so bad and you'll have great piece of mind.

For photos you've worked on and spent time with, put them into a collection and export the catalog to your desktop. Then you can burn the catalog file and know that you can always get everything back just the way it was.

I maintain two primary Lightroom libraries/databases:

The first and large one is my working set, where new work is imported and adjusted, etc.

When a set of photos has been "finished" for whatever purpose, I export them to a set of

PSD or TIFF files, often a set of small JPEGs as well, as I want to be able to obtain exactly

that rendering at any time in the future.

The second and somewhat smaller "completed" library is where I import all the finished

work outputted from the working library. I don't do any image editing in this library, but I

might occasionally do some metadata editing as I draw upon finished work to recombine

into different presentations for exhibition or sale.

It seems to be a flexible working system for my needs so far.
