discpad
Hello, fellow Photo dotNetters! If you're going to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for any reason at all, be sure to go to the museum building in the infield. You'll find an extensive collection of cars on the first floor; but more importantly, to the left of the ticket booth is the elevator to the 2nd floor where the Photo Archives is located... And open to the public every day. Currently, they have over one million negatives (and glass plates!) going back to 1909 when it opened; and about 3 million newer digital images cataloged into an image database. What's more, is that there are books of contact prints for every year; and if you're not sure, one of the (very helpful!) staff will pull the actual neg to examine under a loupe on the light table. The day after this year's 500 my fiancee and I spent 3 hours combing through the ~3000 images from the 1963 Indy 500: Her father was a mechanic for Parnelli Jones that year... And it was the winning team. Less than one book of contact prints out of the three for that year were 35mm: The rest were 6x6... and 4x5 inch! Reprint prices are reasonable: We ordered 18 8x10's at $10 apiece; and Firehouse Graphics scanned, then printed the negs on their Lambda, with them arriving in about 8 days... Not too shabby at all. discpad
...And, my fiancee would kill me if I didn't post the photo of her standing next to the 1963 winning car her father worked on (and pushed into Victory Lane)... Now if only she didn't have that stoopid taxicab racing tee shirt on!<div></div>
