jo7hs2
Anybody heard anything on the status of repairs to Parsons Branch Road? The GSMNP website has said the same thing for well over a year on the matter. I know the flood damage was pretty bad. I kind of expect them to close the road permanently, although that would be a shame, because it provides a less nauseating (ever been on US 129 in a large car), if somewhat slower, route to Fontana Lake side of the park from the TN side. Any information is welcome.
jo7hs2
Wow, my math was a tad off. The road has been closed since 2003. Supposedly it was scheduled to be re-opened by Spring 2007, and $2m was allocated to fix it. That's sure a lot for a gravel road...
jo7hs2
The $2m figure was from what sounded like an angry anti-road activist. A NPS press release said... "A Robbinsville, NC, firm, Herve Cody Contractor has been awarded a $744,410 contract to repair 5 washout areas along the 8 mile-long, one-way gravel road. Under terms of the contract they have until June 15, 2007 to complete the work." Repairs were supposedly started on October 16, 2006. http://www.nps.gov/grsm/parknews/parsonbranch-repair.htm
james_lee23
I was down there a couple of weeks ago and the Ranger said that it should be fixed in a few more weeks.
jo7hs2
The gate onto US 129 (which was a terror today due to the bicycles) looked like it was still locked, so I think they missed that deadline.
