ajzammit
Hi everybody. i was recently contemplating about the various accessories like bounce cards, and diffusers to improve the light from speedlights. This website has proven to be very helpful and packed with great information, and has helped me greatly with photography in every aspect. Anyway... so i was thinking of what i an do to improve the flash light without spending a lot of money, and came up with this little idea, and thought it would be only fair to share it with you. I use the SB-800 and figured that perhaps a larger bounce card could yield better results. I basically increased the size of the bounce card and attach it to the flash head using self-adhesive Velcro. the good things about this system is: 1 - You can still attach the diffuser even while using the bounce card. 2 - The card fits neatly into a shirt pocket ... and 3 - When storing the flash in its pocket, the card can simply be attached to the head upside-down and stored together with it 4 - The card can be attached to the side of the flash so it can be used in both landscape and portrait orientation (just like with: A Better Bounce Card - www.abetterbouncecard.com ) 5 - It easily removed or attached.. just takes a second or two. 6 - It only costs a few cents ... and is very easy to make, yet looks very professional (especially if you paint the unused side black). I'm attaching just a few shots to give you an idea. All i used was some thin whit plastic material (cit out from a white plastic box file) and some self adhesive Velcro.<div></div>

Peter_in_PA
BRILLIANT... I use a piece of foam core and a rubber band... yours is way better. Also, how did you like with and without the diffuser. I find that I ALWAYS like the diffuser better with my
robert_hooper1
If you don't like sticking Velcro on your speedlight, a legal size envelope and a rubber band will work quite nicely.
pete_s.
Had it like that for a year. And I have the back side black with vecro and can use it as a black flag. I use the vecro for gels too.
pete_s.
BTW, I put the vecro on the other way around. The soft side on the flash and the hard on the card. Easier on the hands when you need to flip the head around.
ilkka_nissila
Well I tried this approach a few years ago and didn't think it worked right. IMO too little of the light gets reflected from the card. I prefer an approach where nearly all of the light from the flash is reflected from a card.
ajzammit
Thanks all for your replies. Peter, I too prefer using the diffuser at all times. That?s why I wanted to make sure I can attach both the card and diffuser. I was undecided whether to stick the rough part to the flash or the soft side of the Velcro. I have rough hands... so I didn't matter much to me. :-) Ilkka, I?m not sure exactly if i understand what you meant, but if you reflect all the light from the card, then i assume that no light bounces of the ceiling no? (Correct me if I'm wrong please). Thanks again for your replies. Regards.
mark_lapolt___new_haven__c
While packing for a wedding in March, I forgot to pack my diffuser. The wedding was at a hotel's reception hall, and there were near-blizzard conditions present, so I decided to check in and stay the night once I arrived. When they gave me the key card for the room, they gave it to me in a folded card envelope that had one all-white side. I went back to the front desk begged a couple of rubber bands from the clerk slipped the card envelope on my flash head, and proceeded to have a great wedding. mary_heinz
I've been trying to do something similar to the "abetterbouncecard" but not sure it's going to work// I only have a POP-UP flash..so I got some white "funfoam" and cut out a funny shape to "tuck" up into the hood of the pop up flash/ then cut out a "square" shape to go up and taped it so it would point up and out a bit...haven't processed yet to see what if anything of it is working...do you think it might? or I HAVE to have a flash in the "hot shoe" will be the only way somehting like this would work ? mary_heinz
Just re-read this again. What are you using for the diffuser? It looks almost like a "little elastic cap"
