amycary-hult
Hello, I did two newborn (well...a one-month-old and two-month-old) sessions this past weekend. It was my first time to shoot such small little people and I have to say it was fun, yet challenging. I felt like I went into my shoots fairly armed with good information and tips - thanks to you all here on the baby forum at photo.net! I have especially admired Emily Koch's work. Of course, I realize I have a LONG way to go, but I am just curious what comments, suggestions you experienced baby photographers might have for me. I shot with a Nikon D100, a 50 mm 1.4 Nikon lens, large windows of natural light and an umbrella/flash set-up to the other side of the subject for fill. I have placed a folder titled, "Newborns" in my portfolio. Thanks for your help! Amy

chema_perez
Hi!. nice debut, I've never done baby work but please accept some IMHO advices. You have to be super extra careful focusing that 50mm wide open in close distances. A nice looking portrait when at least one eye is in focus. Careful wih the eyes flash reflections and distracting (almost black)background (nothing you can't post process). Two of them have an underexposed look (don't know if it is your postprocessing...) a light/flash meter and manual everything is the way. You can always cut a bit so when shooting entire body leave some space around so you will never cut a foot by distraction. I gues when shooting a baby it is not easy to have always perfect everything as you have to be concentrate on the shooting instant so... as you said is challenging! good luck!
