carmo
I sent this in earlier but didn't seem to get posted. If it did- sorry for the repeat. I was wondering if anyone with a 30D has experienced a significant difference in the shots remaining when going from the Creative mode to Basic Mode. I have a SanDisk Extreme III 4.0GB card. When newly formatted, the shots remaining in any of the Basic modes is 973 and the shots remaining in the Creative Mode is 999. Additionally, the shots remaining begins to drop as I take pictures in the basic modes but doesn't start to drop until after approx. 70 shots in the Creative modes. The Quality setting is the same in all modes. I know that 999 is the upper limit of the shots remaining counter on a 30D but could/should there be that big a discrepancy difference between shots remaining in the two different modes? Any thoughts? Thanks.
beth_dill
Mine's the same way. I hadn't put much thought into why though. But I did notice it.
timswaback
perhaps it meters slightly darker in creative mode. I pretty sure that brighter areas take more MB's, so it could depend on the average brightness of the scene.
buck_rogers1
What is your ISO in creative mode? If it's 100 then each jpg should be smaller than, say ISO 400. In basic mode, the camera might just be staying on the safe side and estimating remaining shots based on ISO 400 exposures.
beth_dill
I think you guys are right. Most of the basic mode shots are at 400 i think and its ISO 100 in creative. It's never bothered me, so I didn't think of that.
carmo
Sounds right. My main concern was just that there was nothing wrong with my camera. I'm also a bit surprised the Canon Tech support group didn't exactly say that- just that they thought it was operating as should.
agustin.benencia
The Basic mode doesen't allow you to take pictures in RAW format. You maybe you have this format selected in the Creative mode so when you switch to the Basic one the remainings change occording to the JPEG quality. KenPapai
...as if there is any practical, real, or otherwise difference in "973 shots remaining" vs. "999"...
carmo
The format is JPEG for both but thanks for the suggestion. Ken- You're absolutely right. My initial reason/concern for the post was that when I was shooting in the Creative Modes with an empty card the "shots remaining" wasn't reducing- it was staying at 999 and I thought that there was a problem. It's not until I took about 70 shots that it started to reduce to 998 etc. I'm just suprised that there is that big a difference in storage between the two modes. Bottom line is as long as it's working as it should, I don't care if there is that big a difference. Thanks again for the good comments and suggestions. paul_mckinley2
If there both in jpeg is the detail set the same also ?
carmo
As far as the Quality- yes. As far as the ISO, shutter...no, which I know would account for some difference in file size and storage but I didn't think it would be 80-90 shots different (approx 10%)
