Finepix S9600

Recommended Posts

Much as I am a fan of the pro-sumer and prefer using mine to a DSLR I am afraid you cannot compare the 9600 with a DSLR with fixed lens with it's small 1/1.6 sensor compared to the 4/3 and APS sensors of most DSLRs.

To me the 9600 doesn't even match up to others of its type since it lacks OIS and I think it is criminal to sell a 10x zoom camera without OIS these days. People are not wedded to tripods today if they ever were.

The only fixed lens camera to compare with DSLRs is the Sony R1 which has/had [ it may be out of production ] an APS sized sensor.

All that is not to say for many people the pro-sumer will give the DSLR a good run for it's money with superior features [iMO] which I miss in my DSLR. Particularly entry level DSLRs. DSLRs come into their own when you spend big on good lens and other accessories you may need for specialist purposes, along with shooting under poor lighting conditions, or need high shutter speeds requiring higher ISO.

Look at the pictures from the fuji's website. They look good. Fujinon lens is excellent. For $400 you can not go wrong with this camera. I just ordered one for my wife. She will be going for a boat cruise in Russia, so she wanted a hassle free camera that can take decent pictures in any situation. In my opinion s9100/9600 meets this criteria. It is fast. It has dust-proof construction. It uses AA batteries. It is not to heavy. You will not be uspet for too long if you accidentally destroy the camera. It takes good picture. It is made in Japan (for what it worth).

All digital cameras are disposable. In one year you will get a different camera, so get what suites your needs at his point of time.

Re. stablization - forget about it. Take 2-3 pictures or an object (it is free). Thers is a very good chance that on of them will be sharp. As you know stabilization doesn't make all pictures sharp, it just decreases probability of blur.

Fuji's super CCD higher ISO pictures are much cleaner than the pictures taken with regular ccd, this alone will give you an extra stop or two.

hi

i know i'm late but it's only now that i can afford to think of getting one. i can't decide between the fz50 and s9600. i even joined to put up a posting for some advice.

your statement "Fuji's super CCD higher ISO pictures are much cleaner than the pictures taken with regular ccd" - could you provide some visual reference as comparison between the s9600 and another camera of similar strengths, preferably pictures that are shot HANDHELD at higher iso like 400 and 800, but not in bright light please and not with the help of a tripod? are you also saying that perhaps iso 800 pictures from the s9600 is comparable with iso 400 or even 200 on similar cameras?

i've tried to find iso 400 and 800 pictures take with the s9600, but it seems that i can only find up to 400, and all in perfect lighting conditions. any camera could do that, right?

thanks.

kev .

The S9600 super CCD sensor means that unlike any other sensor the pixels are hexagonal, 2 different sizes doing different jobs and arranged in a honeycomb fashion, this explains how they manage to cram so many pixels onto a smaller sensor , they didnt , they re just arranged more intelligently. So you cannot do a like for like comparison with any other dslr sensor , except the s5. Bridge cameras died away and this camera only costs half what its immediate predecessor did. I suppose for that price people thought safer to invest in a more established formula and brand ie good ol dslr canon or nikon.. new or used. It is a good camera but if you want any chance at all of getting a very satisfying quality pic, you neeeeeed to get a tripod , there is no image stabiliser and that ruins your chances of a crisp shot a lot of the time. But god it works well when it does !<div>00NxoL-40887584.jpg.e2b38b533f21050b860215b7a7c40373.jpg</div>
