antoine_clappier
Hi all! I have a second question about buying a new LCD Monitor. My new laptop comes with an HDMI output. Problem: most if not all theprofessional Monitors come with a DVI input! I have found HDMI to DVI cables but I have no idea of what happens inside thisconverter cable. Does the signal is downgraded? Is it converted to analog video?Remain stricly the same? Does it have an impact on color accuracy? I am greatly interested to get your feedback on this question. Thanks, Antoine Clappier
sam_thompson2
HDMI is just DVI+Audio+copy protection. For your everyday Photoshop use or internet use, there shouldn't be any difference. The problem arises is when you want to play Blu-ray or HDDVDs, if that is the case and the Blu-ray r HD DVD is content protected, then it will degrade your signal. Some monitors come with DVI-HDCP, in that case your media should play fine. There may be a point in the future where still images also come with some sort of digital copy protection. http://tv.about.com/od/hdtv/a/hdmidvihdcp.htm
steve_dunn2
HDMI is digital. DVI can be digital, analog, or both. I take it you're going from HDMI to DVI digital, in which case there are no worries about signal degradation; HDMI, by design, uses the same digital signalling used in DVI. As the previous response pointed out, there may be HDCP (copy protection) issues.
Brad_
I have found HDMI to DVI cables but I have no idea of what happens inside this converter cable.
No problem converting HDMI to DVI in a normal laptop-monitor scenario; it's all digital with robust differential signalling. Just get the right cable.
And don't pay too much. It's **amazing** how the HDMI "premium cable" industry (Monster, etc) is a huge rip-off. Go to monoprice.com and get a great 6' HDMI-DVI cable for 5 bucks. www.citysnaps.net

jon_austin
I saw a program once that featured the house (mansion) in which the founder/CEO of Monster Cable lives. Now I know where those huge price premiums go ...
antoine_clappier
Thank you all for your answers. I just discovered the Photo.net forums. I like very much the tone of the forum both serious and funny at the same time. This is getting a rarity on internet forums!
