roy1
That time of year again...
Just booked a trip to California, the plan is Yosemite (2 nights... was there same time last year), and 2 nights in each Sequoia and Kings Canyon.

Just wonder if you have any general input about where you like to stay in those parks... particularly in Sequoia and Kings Canyon (and what's the best spots to hike and photograph)... do you think I need to make reservations for camping?

The dates are May 9th to the 16th.

Thanks in advance,
Roy. craig_gillette
I believe Yosemite plans on having camping areas open, I would suppose the other parks as well, but this doesn't mean that they would necessarily all be the prime areas, so I'd consider reservations if available for the more popular or convenient campgrounds. dave42
hey roy-if you haven't been to sequoia before and are up for a great hike, you should do the lakes hike. great views and opps for photo's! you can do it in 1 day or do an overnight at pear lake. also a recommendation is obviously the many giant groves of redwoods. there is the general sherman loop but try to extend your walk a bit and go away from teh crowds. then the tree's get really interesting. another great spot is on 189 going into kings. its a grove i think called "the stump grove". its where a logging company fell a whole grove and they have preserve the area so you see these huge stumps. as you can see lots of great things to do too many to mention! have a great time! -david
roy1
Thanks guys, any suggestions as far as campsites in Sequoia and King Canyon?
dave42
In sequoia lodgepole is my favorite in the main part of the park. there is also the mineral king valley which is breathtaking but the hiking there is difficult, straight up! also tack on 2-3 more hours in the car. 23 mile super winding road. have a great time. nadopix
Mineral King is certainly (in my humble opinion) one of the least noticed and most beautiful scenics in the Sierras. Unfortunately it may still be half-frozen this time of year. I usually go in July and can still find some snow a mile or so up the (steep) trail. Call ahead. It's hard to go wrong with SNP! My personal webpage has a picture from MK as the homepage (www.timcaucuttphotography.com).
