tbelleza
I bought this lens new almost a year ago. Admittedly, I do not use it as often as my other lenses (28-70 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/4L, & 100-400LIS. But my keeper rate is less than 1/10. It is not as sharp as my other lenses. I have tried all the various shooting modes with minimal success. I bought this lens because I read the following comment, "This lens is so sharp it makes my eyes bleed." Any suggestions?
Stock-Photos
Sell it! Next time don't buy a lens based on one comment.
derek_linney
The 135mm f2 should give sharper images than any of your other lenses. Have you tried manually focusing - to make sure its not an auto-focus calibration issue?
stephen sullivan
"I bought this lens new almost a year ago...." Why not send it to Canon in Irivne, CA, along with receipt. Ask them to check the lens for you. It is quite possible that you purchased a bumb lens. Happened to me once with the EF 85mm f/1.8 right out of the box. As said, your EF 135 f/2L should be your sharpest lens.

andrew robertson
Are you shooting at shutter speeds higher than 1/150th? If not, expect crappy photos.
mike_earussi1
Have you tested it by putting it on a tripod and manually focusing it?
charles_lipton
I know! Sell it to me cheap since you don't use it often and it's a bad copy. I live 10 miles from the Irvine Canon service center. he he he.... But, I agree with the other postings. Shoot it at a minimum 1/120 sec. and try manual focus on a tripod to see if ifs a lens issue or user issue. Good luck
sgtwoodro
But, you could have a bad one. --sean
bob_osullivan
They have a service center in NJ too. Check canoneos.com and click on support to generate a work order and get the service center info. I'd call them and talk to a technician. I had the same problem with a 70-200 4L. I went back and forth doing a lot of testing, and trying to live with it. When I finally sent it in, it was only gone a week and I got it back in perfect condition. It wasn't just out of calibration, it needed parts replaced too. And this lense was only 1 month old. They make great lenses but are not very consitent at all it seems.

wuyeah
Yes, 135L is the sharpest lens I have ever own from Canon. I have owned 35L, 50 f1.4, 20-35, 28-135IS, 70-300IS, 16-35L, 24-70L, 70-200 2.8L IS. My 135L is far better in sharpness than all meantion above. If you don't feel that way, you clearly got a lemon. To me is night and day difference. Compare with 70-200mm IS my 135L does get "wow, this lens is good, I will never sell it" kind of effect. andrew robertson
"If you don't feel that way, you clearly got a lemon." OR the much more likely explanation: problem with technique.
derek_linney
Give the guy a break. He has some decent glass with which he is obviously happy so you cannot lay it on him as bad techique. He may well have a sample that needs adjustment / calibration. Just because your 135mm f2 is pin sharp don't assume he is an idiot.
andrew robertson
I never said anybody was an idiot. However, it may be that his technique needs work.
wuyeah
" I do not use it as often as my other lenses (28-70 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/4L, & 100-400LIS." Quote from Ted. Andrew, IMO, I don't think his technique needs work. Perhaps you did not read carefully so I quote for you. The lightest boy among 3 is 24-70L, which it is weight 950g. The 135L is weight 750g. He has no problem handle white boys (70-200 4L & 100-400L) I doubt he will hv problem with 135L in technique. Ted, you need to service your 135L or return it. (Sell it to other when you know it has problem, just not very nice to other consumer.) 135L is a joy lens. i sold my 70-200 2.8L IS with no regret. peza
24-70/2.8L is excellent. 70-200/2.8L IS is very very very good. 135/2L is better than either of them.
Considering you have few L lenses, longer and slower, I tend to believe technique is not a problem, unless you have AF problem - 20D was not up to the task to shoot 85/1.8 wide open. 135/2 on 5D basically not a problem, but - not perfect either..

This is what I use it for and it is as good as it gets:
DickArnold
That's a great expression. It's what I strive for. Whichever lens doesn't matter that much if I can get the subject to react.
