hayward
I want a small, light zoom for my 12 year-old son to use with a D50 body. I picked up a used 24-85mm AF-S and like it, but wondered if any of you have used it and could compare it to the 18-70mm AF-S. Your thoughts on the comparitive optics would be appreciated. I have a number of good lenses, like the 28-70mm AF-S, but they are a little big for him now. I want him to have a small zoom, but want to avoid the 18- 55mm bottom-rung stuff. I know some of you will suggest a 50mm f/1.8 and that's a possibility, but tend to think a beginner needs a zoom for mazimizing interest.
k_h2
you have a very lucky son. i used to own a 18-70/3.5-4.5G and now i own a 24-85/3.5-4.5G. personally i think the 24-85G wins out on sharpness while the 18-70G wins out on being wider on the wide end. but to be honest, i don't think it matters. he will find his new camera a very fun learning experience. savagesax
For just a few more dollars the 24-85 2.8/4 is a decent lens too.
titospna
I personally prefer the 24-85mm (f/3.5) over the 18-70mm. The sample I have is sharper than the 18-70 that I tried. I just have to compromise on the wide end, but I like the extra reach. If I was going to get a lens for a young kid, starting to play around with photography, I would opt for the new 18-135mm. I think he would get a bigger kick out of it, especially since he can go long. At that stage, I really wouldn't worry so much about the optics. He needs to nail down the technique and the theory, while having fun. He's a lucky duck.

ramon_v__california_
i would choose the the 18-70mm. now if it was a film camera it will be the 24-85mm. if you didn't have a limited choice, sorry, but i would recommend the 50mm f/1.8.
michaelkh
I'm with Ramon. If I had no film legacy cameras to worry about I'd buy the 18-70, which seems to me to be great value for money. That said, I have the 24-85 AF-S, which I also bought secondhand, and find it an astonishingly good lens for what I paid, on both my F80 and my (APS-C) Fuji S2. A bit more wide end would be nice, but I think if you've already got the 24-85, get him started with it and see where he goes.
