elaine marie
I have run across several beautiful web sites and blogs lately of amazing work. I simply can not tell if they are using strobes or natural light. The light seems to be controlled but yet so natural. I am trying to read the catch lights but just can't figure it. Please look at these in this blog and let me know what you think. Thank you
http://www.momentscherished.typepad.com/
also on this site
http://www.myspace.com/rachelphotographer
Absolutly beautiful lighting.
Thank you Elaine

elaine marie
But some of the catch lights look like they could be windows to me?
bruce levy
You could do it with either hot lights or strobes. It's the finesse, not the equipment.
chris_vincent2
All flash with big big big softbox.
pico
Look at the pictures where the eyes' iris can bee seen and you will note that they are rather open so the ambient light is not enough to make the picture... and the large soft box can be seen in the reflection. If you were to have this much ambient light for a high shutter speed, the eyes iris would be unattractively small.
elaine marie
Thank you for eveyones help so far. The darker one of the pregnant woman sitting where only one side is lit but the background is slightly lit. Is that a back light up high and a controlled side light with a snoot or barn doors? Thanks Elaine
joseph avalon official sit
Lighting looks a little too artificial to be natural daylight (or HMI). I'm gonna say strobes. The pregnant-woman-sitting shot looks like one light source...maybe with barn doors...or possibly two (the second being the snoot you speak of). On the other hand, all the dark could have been added with the burn tool in Photoshop. OR that interesting patch of light in the background may also have been a second light placed behind the seamless (or muslin).
chris_vincent2
Looks like a 3 light set up to me. Two on the background with barndoors to prevent light coming back towards the camera. One softbox just to the left of the camera.
elaine marie
Thank you Everyone, Sometimes the lighting just throws me.The baby's skin looks so white I just don't understand how to get black and whites like that. Elaine
d_g5
They are all done with studio lighting. The catchlights in the eyes reflect exactly what type of light source was used. It appears that they were all strobes in softboxes.
kathie_jounes
Not to be a smart aleck but drop that photog a note and ask her! Unless she is someone in your immediate area who would be considered a rival, I don't doubt that she would be glad to answer your questions.
